remington's quality control???

Yes, that's prolly good enough for most. I used to be of that mindset. Then I got bit by the bug. Does that make me a snob? I would never say anything to any one to deride their shooting, I might think it wasn't akin to my expectations but I'd be keeping my mouth shut.

Josh, I'm old and easily confused. The point of your post is?

It is not nice to pick on Butch he is an icon on this and many other sites.

Remington has made rifles that shoot with the best ever made. Remington has made it's share of Turds. Every new production Remington model 700 made in the Birmingham plant suffers from "no primary extraction". They have been made aware of their problem and are taking their sweet time at fixing the issue. A simple fix would be to reprogram the Gcode for the back of the rear bridge moving it .065" to .075" clock wise. Then the caming surface would function as Mike Walker designed them in 1963.

Whoa, fellas. I'm not picking on any body. My post was an examination of accepted norms , with a little self reflection on the side. Reading it again, I can see it could be interpreted otherwise. Let me try again. I used to be a guy that shot his guns once or twice a year, as were my friends. A factory gun that my father or grandfather gave me was good enough for me. If I hit the target most shots, I thought I was doing pretty good. A 3 inch group at a hundred was great. Meanwhile, I was running a business and raising a family and didn't have the time or interest in shooting any better. I had heard rumors of "really accurate custom guns" but I never went looking for one. I didn't know any gunsmiths and there wasn't any internet. When I retired and had a lot of free time on my hands and money in the bank, I started shooting more, asking questions and doing research. Here I am 5 years later, still learning but knowing a heck of a lot more than I did. I even own a couple customs. These days when I go to the range and see a guy shooting a factory gun and smiling about his three inch groups, I just smile with him and don't say anything. I see my old self in him. If he asks me any questions about doing better, well I can get pretty windy. My father was a teacher and I think a little rubbed off. These days, I'm shooting .3s to .4s on a good day and trying to do better. I 'd be really upset if I shot a 3 inch group. I am guilty of thinking I'm shooting better than 75% of the gun owning public, hence my question. Does that make me a snob? My accepted norm has changed.

Butch, I certainly wasn't trying to make a back handed comment towards you or anyone. Some times, what I think comes out wrong on paper. By the way, I have 3 700s that shoot good and one came with chisel marks like Dusty's picture.

Not worried. Just wanted to know more about your intent. I've shot BR for a lot of years, but will not wear out a hunting rifle trying to get it to shoot in the "ones". If my hunting rifles shoot a true MOA in all conditions and cold or warm barrel, it is good for me. I do not hunt diminutive creatures. Exceptions, my 458 Lott, 450 Ackley magnum, and 416 Rigby may not shoot MOA but I don't shoot them off the bench to see.

How do you know if a given 700 was made in Birmingham, or elsewhere?

Danny

RR prefix in the serial number and it says made in Birmingham not Ilion.

Thanks for the info. I have a bunch of Remingtons I bought and put in the safe that have never been shot or even looked at much. I am going to go through my rifles and look them over for this.
