I had a very similar R700, (HS stock, HB, cal) purchased new from the factory. the gun shot like a remington 1100 with all but one load, and that one load worked quite well for a factory gun (5/8 MOA) when borescoped, good god, the barrel looked like the ass end of the moon. tooling marks, pitting etc. I ended up shooting it for several years like that, because... well....it got the job done if fed its pet load. many, many PD's accumulated frequent flier miles on that shitty tube. that was 1995... I'd be alarmed if the quality has gone down!

I still have that same R700. recently rebarreled (3rd rebarrel) Krieger 12T. the only thing that is still factory is the action and bolt. After replacing most of the important bits and a giving the action a spin on the lathe, it shoots amazingly well!

Remington itself has admitted QC issues. with the excellent selection of custom actions / bbls available today, I see no reason to purchase factory. (other than $$$)

I can vouch for Remington's poor quality lately, but one area they have not slacked on is their barrels. Some of their factory barrels on my rifles shoot as good or better than the Shilen barrels I had put on. I have a Sendero 7mm mag and two 5r 308s and all have the original Remington factory barrel. They shoot very good and they clean easily too. I find it hard to believe Remington would cut a barrel that poorly. Do they have a tendency to free bore the barrel? Yes, but that's easily alleviated with shooting a longer bullet that gets closer to the lands.

a friend was looking at a rem 700, bull barrel bedded in an h-s stock, chambered in.223, 9 twist...$900+, sales tax and background check...$$$$. i suggested i borescope it first to see if it had any freebore as he wanted to shoot heavy bullets and another friend with this same combo had a problem in that bullets were being pushed into the case at chambering. what i saw was unbelievable...maybe not. one land was uncut and the intervening groove was also uncut..."no freebore" in part of the bore and very little in the rest. the chamber was so crooked i would fear shooting the thing! i know remingtom"s quality has gone down, but this is beyond poor quality control. does remington not care?

yes they are shipping out rifles with bad barrels which is why there have been so many great buys on the 700! I got a great buy on new 700 long range in a 7mm mag. when I got home and look at barrel with bore scope it was real dirty and looked like it had been shot a lot with real bad powder. I went and cleaned it and could not believe my eyes! it looked like someone had put a dremel tool into barrel and cut into half of each lands and then a little farther down it was done again. I called the place I had just got it from and they said to bring it back in so they could look at it as they have a no return policy. I took my bore scope with me and they about got sick when they looked inside that barrel and they got right on the phone and also said they would take back gun and then ask me to look down all there Remington barrels as they had got a large shipment but that was the only bad barrel! they replaced the rifle and it is a real shooter. also they had in stock Remington ADL stainless 26in bbl which I had never seen! I got one and hand lapped barrel and put on good scope and it shoots moa@ 1400ylds and under moa@ 1000yds.

It's amazing that through the years technology has increased the Quality of some firearms, Tikka for instance. Then Remington on the other hand, an older company that everyone was raised with practically from childhood have deteriorated to disgusting levels.
If one deals accordingly with his money, they are sure to get the message, but whether they will EVER give a Damn again is the major question, which they have been answering in years gone by, NOPE!

I've had numerous Rem 700's trued up and loved them. But lately I've been hearing Remington is out of the component business, (brass, primers, etc..)
Well I'm out of the Remington business. Leaving guys hanging with rum's and saums, not a business model I will support.

Buying a Remington 700, getting the action trued, new barrel and installation cost is NOT what I call buying a good rifle by any stretch of the imagination, you might as well buy all the parts (custom parts) and build a rifle that will be better all around for the money and resale.
Maybe some of the gunsmiths will chime in here and mention the differences between a Rem 700 vs Tikka T3 action relative to quality of build from the manufacture!

Remington and Quality should never be used in the same sentence, the new ones are just scrap iron IMO and unless you have extra money and a Remington fetish that are better ways to go that don't require getting lucky to have a quality rifle. If I could get a 3.850 mag box in a Tikka I would likely never take a Remington in again, well that's not quite true cause for a guns smith the only thing that makes more money than a Remington is a Tactical Remington!!!

I think this has been going on for a while actually. It was mentioned to me about five years ago and I saw a the same thing as you. The worst part is Remington knows about it. I was told it was something like a 1.2 million dollar fix and that's why they haven't done anything about it.

Also just like the pic of the rifle with the groove in it, I had a 223 wth one all the way around about 3" in from the chamber. I never could get it to shoot. Finally had a chance to bore scope it later on and I guess I know why now.

I don't disagree with most of what you say, there is a Remington warranty repair shop here and I get to see a lot of what's wrong. But after many years of barreling other manufacturers actions I can say that Savage/Winchester/whoever really aren't much better. That is the reason that the aftermarket barrel business exists. I expect that Remington could make near perfect barrels if they wanted to by drilling, reaming and cutting rifling but then that would put them into the price range of customs. Manufacturing is sometimes a compromise to get something out that has a reasonable price point and I don't think that a custom quality Remington for $3500 is what they're after. Remind me to tell ya'll about the customer who sent his rifle back for warranty repair because the barrel was overheating and making heat waves in front of his scope so he couldn't see to shoot, or maybe the one that didn't know you had to pick the bolt handle up to pull it back.

The Remington 700, 870 and 1100 made the modern Remington Arms company what it is. The designs, price and performance put them out in front of their competition. The designs were relatively simple to manufacture and with even a modicum of adherence to tolerances delivered good results. Accountants make lousy QC decisions. Remington is owned by a holding company that wants to sell it at a profit. They brought in the MBA's to dress up the bottom line a while back and there is no benefit they can see to fixing the problem.

I bought a 700 in 1999. That was my first and last 700.

On another note, how about all the new autoloading shotgun models over the years? Each one dies on the vine as consumers simply bypass them for the 1100.

ive seen rem700 varmint barreled 308 cal with scope included sold at major chain sporting good store for 500 dollars.

Its primary consumer are for those hunters that come to the range one time a year (week b4 open season) fires three rounds and says "I'm on" announced loudly for everyone to hear and packs up and leave.

Yes, that's prolly good enough for most. I used to be of that mindset. Then I got bit by the bug. Does that make me a snob? I would never say anything to any one to deride their shooting, I might think it wasn't akin to my expectations but I'd be keeping my mouth shut.
