remington's quality control???

a friend was looking at a rem 700, bull barrel bedded in an h-s stock, chambered in.223, 9 twist...$900+, sales tax and background check...$$$$. i suggested i borescope it first to see if it had any freebore as he wanted to shoot heavy bullets and another friend with this same combo had a problem in that bullets were being pushed into the case at chambering. what i saw was unbelievable...maybe not. one land was uncut and the intervening groove was also uncut..."no freebore" in part of the bore and very little in the rest. the chamber was so crooked i would fear shooting the thing! i know remingtom"s quality has gone down, but this is beyond poor quality control. does remington not care?

Ah.... the "borescope phenomenon" is here....

I'm curious how a reamer, running in a rotary direction, could somehow skip hitting one land, while cutting the rest.

Was the opposing side cut doubly deep?

Were the adjoining lands cut at varying (tapered) depths?

Do you have pictures to allow us to visualize it?

Listen to CB. They are hammer forged. Even at that I would believe it is a warranty item. Lots of unanswered questions here.

To answer your question; no they don't care. It's cheaper for them to pump out crap and deal with the occasional warranty claim than to do things the old fashion way (the right way). For $1,000 I would be on the phone with Remington.

A borescope without a centralizer can give some funny looks to the inside of a barrel.

How do you measure freebore with a borescope? And when did they start bedding their rifles? Its got so bad i had a bunch this past deer season with gouges in the chambers so bad you couldnt pull a fired case out

I have a 700 in an ADL with a bad 30-06 chamber. On a once fired brass, it blows a big swell in one side of the case from the base up about one third of the way up. Not a problem at all with a dedicated hunting rig that gets second hand brass and little care given to the care. If it were more than that and cost as much as the OP, I would return immediately.

It looks like a cold chisel got in this chamber

The last new R700 SPS I bought was about 5 years ago. It would not chamber a factory round of 223 when I got it home and cleaned up. Turns out, via the borescope, the chamber had a deep gouge in one place and the metal was pushed up into a "pile" next to it. Obviously they don't do even a one shot test fire before they leave the factory. The worst part was they forced me to take it to an Authorized Warranty station even when I told them no one but the factory could fix it. The "Warranty station" wound up shipping it back and they charged me $40. Screw the whole bunch!

The factory will ship you a return label which is what your dealer likely did and pocketed the money when you could have done it yourself. Don't fall for that stuff as there are a lot of unscrupulous dealers that feel it is their duty to rip you off. I would call Remington and see if they would refund the return money. It is legal to ship a rifle to Remington and then they ship it to your door.

Recently saw a Remington Promotional video about their new, I believe, Alabama factory. They vowed to make QC their priority and NO rifle was to leave without test firing. Makes you wonder if the dealers or the stores are sabotaging those rifles before selling 'em.

Those that came in like the one i showed may have got test fired but they woulda had to use a hammer to get the bolt back. Wouldnt surprise me if they did beat it open and send it on. Most were sps rifles but one was a premium 5r rifle

In all fairness, I did buy a used R700 AAC-SD in 308. The trigger was changed to a Timney 517 and the stock to a Mcree. Everything about the BA was good and it shoots around .6 MOA as far as my 520 yard range with 175SMK and Varget.

I know the barrels are hammer forged , with or without full chamber , I'm not sure , but a good question has been brought up , a lot of theses rifles have scope packages . Bore sighted , what if the salesman/ gun tinkerer inserts a chamber type bore laser with trash , sand etc and closes the bolt ?
The new Remington 783s I've been working on have no such chamber or leade flaws , I'm on 12-13 dif 783 rifles . As I no longer work on 700s , I can't compare . But would think all the Remington barrels are made the same way . Just a wild theory , near the flying saucer , ufo theories know that I think about it !
