I worked for a company that went bankrupt on a Friday. Monday we had no pensions, overtime pay, vacation or health insurance. Over the years, good people departed and it changed hands a few times. Today it is a bare ground lot. It wasn't a union that ran it in to the ground. It was incompetent management, government regulations and our congress

Wow..i remember as a kid I grew up in canton Ohio. In the late 70's there was republican steel, union metal and Timkins barrings...
I believe the only one left is timkins seems to me Old Ronald Ragan moved the steel manufacturing over seas and jus..t like that canton ohio is now a shit hole ..just like all the old oil towns and coal towns in PA.
And one of the more recent shut downs that had a major impact in my community was the closing of LTV steel in Cleveland about 10yrs ago..just devastating families lives.
This pig corporations need to held accountable..
I believe once a company has more then 25 employees they need to be held accountable plain and simple..no more rip and running of the American people and were left with nothing but people out of work and a contaminated plant sight left that can't even be turned into a park because of pollution and chemical spills..

If you want to know what has been wrong with Remington, compare them to Ruger who has a highly successful product line as a US manufacturer. I don't know the facts but suspect you will observe failures from top to bottom of the organization.

When stalwart businesses that were successful for decades or even centuries are turned into a profit machine by a "pump and dump" cash whore Wall Street firm, product value and company reputation become just another victim of greed and power.

No one has bothered to mention the class action law suit over the Walker trigger that locked the bolt when on "safe",,,, or the Sandy Hook law suit. Then there are the individual law suits from those who have had "accidental discharges", to deal with. Admittedly, Remingtons' barrel quality ain't the greatest and the low end shotguns sold out of the big box stores that wouldn't feed straight out of the box. Then, add poor management from those who really have no stake in the firearms industry that are only interested in "what's in it for them" financially and union labor on top of that. Remington just got too deep in debt buying all those other gun companies. Add all that together, and it spells bankruptcy. And when a company like that goes bankrupt, the employees are the last in line.

The blame was the way Remington advertised Bushmaster, not that they made the rifle. To this day, others advertise the ARs they make as 'soldiers weapons', snipers, etc. There was local range here, for awhile. The younger guys would show up, play "machine gun" for 15 minutes and be finished. The range was not located in the best place, to say the least. And neighbors, 3/4 mile down the road, complained and the range closed... Seems like there are many more who will play "machine gun" than there are accuracy/national match shooters. The kid that did that dastardly deed at Sandy Hook was not right in the head. After he killed his mother he still managed to gain entry into the "secure storage" and obtain several guns. Did Remington/Bushmaster advertising influence him? We will never know. But the law suits following that episode certainly helped sink Remington, being the 'parent' company of Bushmaster. Personally, I think any firearms maker that stays in non-friendly gun states is treading on thin ice. There are many gun friendly states that'd be glad to have them. Look at the troubles the NRA is facing in NY...... They can, and will, take any thin reason, drag them into court, and break them financially. The management at Remington might have been terrible, and let bad management and quality control issues go unchecked, but the law suits certainly didn't help matters any.

It’s hard to see how Remington’s marketing caused someone to purchase a gun and go out and kill people with it. Yet, that is exactly what the suits claim. Bad thing is, some of those lawsuits have been settled for 7 figures.
Bad management and excessive debt can bankrupt any company.

Well, It's hypothetical but it would be a difficult and gut wrenching decision, but if it came down to no income and no job prospects, the choice would be easy. As my kids were home schooled, that wouldn't have been an issue.

Many "legacy" companies have lost the institutional memory of what made them great - not only in the firearms business. I worked for 30+ years rep'ing a company that was acknowledged as "the best of the best" in it's industry. It is an old, publicly held company, that while still in business and still the leader of the pack (by a little bit) has forgotten what made them who they were. It started in the 90's when they decided to give all their "seasoned" employees attractive early retirement packages to save money. What really happened was they lost their brain trust - everyone who knew anything and had any experience was gone. The people who replaced them, the 20 & 30-somethings are all really smart, but they don't have the benefit that experience gives a person (knowledge + experience = wisdom) and unfortunately they never will. Because - it's just a job to them, it is not a career.

They know how to read a spreadsheet, at least when it comes to market share and they understand what they need to do to make their own resume standout. But what they lack is passion! Passion for the industry they are in! They don't understand the products they build and sell or the people who buy and use them to make a living and don't want to.

This is not a unique story and my guess is that Remington's is similar. When a company no longer remembers what the core business that made them great was, it's just a matter of time. All of which goes back to management. Management has only one job and that is success. Lots of thing contribute to a company going bankrupt, but the root cause is always a failure of management.

True, I now work for the state government. As when I was in private industry for 52 years, I contribute to my medical, dental and vision care. I pay into my minimum retirement, I will have to live to almost 90 to break even with that retirement contribution. I am also enjoying a 10% pay cut with no raises until June 2022. Then it just picks up where it left off, no retroactive wage or raise recovery. Additionally I earn 50% if what I earned in private industry. So yes, no golden pension and 100% benefits for us.

I'm an 80 year old Vietnam vet. My first job out of college was with Remington Arms in Bridgeport, CT when it still belonged to DuPont. That was the ammunition plant. I also spent some time at the Ilion, NY gun plant. During those years, employees and management were proud to produce a quality product. These plants, however were ancient and needed to come into the 20th century. They were probably built during the civil war. During the 1960s, Remington opened a plant in Oklahoma and Cuernevaca, Mexico. They saw the handwriting on the all back then. Compared to today's modern manufacturing facilities, the old ones were inefficient both from a physical standpoint and personnel. I have no problem upgrading factories, but over the years, we've been poisoned by the love of money and profit has superseded quality and customer service. I just can't believe you can buy a centerfire rifle or a shotgun for $300. Of course, you don't get a wood stock or highly polished blued steel. Everything is cheap, cheap, cheap. Yes they function well, but there's nothing pretty to look at, and nothing that you would care to hand down to your heirs. I left Remington after a couple of years because I saw no future in it. I will add one thing, though. If you produce a quality product at a fair price and have good customer service, that's the recipe of success. That's why Ruger, S&W, Kimber etc are still in business. Everyone seems to like Colt, but when I lived in CT, Colt's quality was hit and miss. I would never buy another Colt product.
