Remington bolt modifications

Before one spends money on Remington 700 bolt esthetics, they should evaluate their bolts performance ie: primary extraction ie: bolt timing. Fix any extraction issues first. Some bolts/bolthandles are beyond fixing. I have seen a number of fancy bolts that don't do what they are supposed to do. Don't throw good money after bad.

Nat,
Do you mean that a Louisville Slugger Baseball Bat added to the end of the bolt handle won't make me a better shooter....with gloves on?

To date,
My hunting partners fluted bolt body grinds coffee quite well.

Nate,

Can you give us a little more info on "beyond fixing". Not being smart, just truly interested and would like to pass on some valuable info to my customers if need be. Pm me if you are more comfortable.

Thanks, Paul

My post was directed to stop you from fluting your bolts and bolt handles. Paul and Dennis do some pretty work. My post is make sure your bolt is giving you primary extraction first. I recently had a rifle brought to me that would not extract spent shells. The gun Smith/machinist who hangs a shingle saying he does the best rifle smithing in the country, installed a M-16 extractor, and bushed the back of the bolt( glued on bushings) then cleaned up the lugs. The bolt in battery has .035" gap between the handle and rear bridge. When the bolt is lifted the primary extraction cams never meet. The customer spent several hundred dollars on a non functioning bolt that can not be fixed. When the customer returned the gun to the gunsmith he told the customer there was nothing wrong. The gunsmiths ego and lack of knowledge are not providing customers with the quality work they are thinking they are getting. I hope this begins to clear up a issue that can be fixed saving customers some heart ache.

WHY can't the handle be removed & a new one with the proper clearance be installed. I have SAWED handles off that were tigged on, chucked in the lathe -turned off the excess,& set a new handle on with .005 clearance to give 98% cam.

Rock-
There are a couple other points of interest to the equation than setting Location(fwd/aft) clearance to acquire 98% primary extraction.

Current OEM Rem production bolt handles were designed by an idiot that can not read a blueprint & apparently never had an action in hand.
Junk in every letter of the word.

There is not a handle manufactured today that is a perfectly TIMED part.

Dan,

Is the problem due to two different angles cast/machined between the handle and receiver where they mate together? Looking forward to your response.

Thanks, Paul

Basically,YES w/ a couple other key points of interest.

A bastardized fusion TIG weld on the underside of the handle over silver brazing or a couple screws in the handle tells me the gun-plumber watched a couple misleading You Tube video's.

Since the Shot Show January 2015 I have not seen a new Remington 700 that was "Timed" correctly. I have contacted Remington numerous times to discuss this with them. They either think I am a "kook" or they want to just stick their head in the sand. I tell all customers with build ideas to abandon. The thoughts of doing it with a Remington 700. The time and expense out weigh the option of using a custom action from the get go. Borden, Kelbly, Pierce all make first class action without any of the issues from an OEM action. The bolts are not only soldered to far rearward they are .055" to .065" clockward out of time.
