Remington 788 fans: Step out of the shadows

The guns just plain shoot. I own too many of them and not one has failed to easily shoot sub-MOA. Some group WAY tighter than that. The baby brother 580/540 rifles are just as eager to shoot better than they should.

So there. I said it. I'm a fan of the 788.

Love my triple deuce and 6rem 788, plus a 582. My 582 is one of the mysterious mahogany stocked versions, was my first rifle.

When I got out of the Army, I was looking for a couple of cheap truck guns for coyotes. Walked into a Western Auto store in my home town and they were unpacking their first two 788s. I couldn't believe the price, so I bought them both --- a 6mm and a .243. They shot factory ammo very accurately and the coyote population diminished dramatically. Bounty and fur prices paid for them in a couple of months. Not real shiny, but one of the best rifle deals ever.

I think I paid $119.95 for mine back in '74 or '75, including a decent Bushnell 4x scope and Weaver bases and rings.

I have 2. My first rifle is one in the good old .30-.30 calliber. Hardly ever see them chambered in that caliber. The second I inherited when a close friend passed, its a .308. Love both.

Two of mine are 30-30's. One I rechambered to 30-30AI. Both guns took the "30-30's don't shoot" theory back to school.

Got 2, one in a dasher and another in 244 Ackley IMP. I love the left bolt / right port
Bought the first one in 1977, started life as a 243 win and 5 barrels later it is a dasher

At the present time a 6mm bought new in 1976 for $79. This rifle is on its second custom barrel, also had two factory barrels on it, wears a custom walnut stock. In the past I have owned a 22-250 that I wish I had never sold and another 6mm. I also own two 581's one with custom walnut stock and the other has a factory stock.

Gotta love a 788. I had one in triple deuce that was the first rifle I ever owned that would genuinely shoot sub-MOA. I've had a couple since that were so-so. I spent a lot of time trying to locate a Canjar trigger, and never did. Had I been able to find one, I'd probably still have that triple deuce. I did a trigger job on it that I found in Rifle magazine, I believe, many years ago. It made the stock 788 trigger pretty good, but it was much too fiddly to depend on. I still keep one eye open for a 788 in .44 Rem Mag, which I believe was only made for one year or less.

I'm a 222 fan thanks to the 788. Mine is worth $100, just like my car was $2850 off the showroom floor...

If that car is a 69 Z28, I will make you an offer 2x what you aid, if you toss the 222 in the back seat

I own two 788s, a 223Rem. and a 308 rebarreled to 7mm-08. They ain't purty but from an out of the box accuracy point of view they're a great value.

so we need a WTB ad, focused on guys who have but never use and hate the 788!! Starting bid, $100

I have my late Fathers 243win M788. Last year I had a buddy strip and refinish the stock, pillar and slim bed it and clean/Parkside the trigger guard and mag well plate. Be added a proper white spacer under the recoil "pad" too.

Rifle shot 95gr NBTs into .5-.6" at 100y with pitting in the last 3" of the barrel, no effort. Afterwards the refinish it shoots about the same. We left the barrel pad but I may need to tweak load a touch. I love it. Only way that rifle will leave my safe is if I end up with a grandkid that wants to hunt and I turn it over to the next generation or something catastrophic happens.

I like them, it's fair to say I am a fan...but, at this time I don't own one. Maybe snert can find the dude that has two and I will double snert's money for the second one!!!!
I used to think it was just guys in Pa. that loved the 788...I seen them fight over 788's at gun shows. But, after building a cabin in the mountains of Virginia I have to say that those guys love them and they are just as highly regarded over that way too.
When I was just out of school I moved to PA. I raked and scraped and saved at $3.66 per hour to buy a 270 Weatherby. Went to the local hunt club and was showing the firing line my new rifle when this cat walks up with a 788...the first one I had ever even heard of and they all dropped that Weatherby like a hot potato to go over and drool for this "cost effective", birch wood stocked, cheese whiz stamped sheet metal trigger guarded thing!!!! At the time I placed greater emphasis on that elephant ivory diamond and those rosewood accents....what did I know???
