Remington 788 fans: Step out of the shadows

Is the bottom stock just painted or a replacement stock? If it's a replacement stock what kind .

Hal
Hi Hal, it is a factory wood stock painted with a textured paint, like rhino-liner. It has held up pretty good for about 15 yrs now.

I have a 1973, LH version in 6mm Remington. I just restocked it using a semi-inletted "Show Me Stock." The inletting was done by a local Tucson gunsmith by the name of Mario at "Old Pueblo Gunsmith." He did a nice job and I'm happy. I'll have it out next week for an impacting ceremony.

People say the rifle is plain and I guess that is so in their eyes. To me it's just streamlined and clean looking. The way I like most things to be in my life.

I have a nice 788 with walnut stock made in 1968 in 22/250 i added a nice vintage Leupold 12x with dot reticle along with one piece redfield base & 4 screw gloss rings timmey trigger, i'm going to refinish the stock with a few coats of tung oil one day soon!

Do you have more pictures of your restock job.
From what I can see, that might be the nicest 788 I've ever seen.

I do but the full-length picture is sort of dark. it was a decent straight grain walnut stock. I checkered it in a 20 line multipoint, I think. The pattern is from Monty Kennedy's book. I plan on sending off my pictures taken with that old camera to scan cafe and having them redone digital to see if it helps. his gun was a carbine with an 18" barrel and the thing looks sort of weird because I went ahead and stocked it with a standard-length forearm in case I could talk him into letting me re barrel it. I'll see if I can get a decent picture of the picture.

I just bought my first 788. A walnut stocked 222 made in 1967. It is going to be one of my go-to rifles for hunting predators. I'm always a sucker for 222s. My $400 gem got a little expensive, the walnut stock was too nice to butcher as I need to shorten stocks to youth length and I bought a used birch or beech stock that had had a recoil pad added. I still had to cut it 3/4" and then added a 1/2" pad and painted the whole stock Desert Tan. The trigger was quite heavy so next added a Timely. I really dislike the two piece bases with only a single screw in the rear base so it now has a EGW rail on it supporting a Burris SS 1.5-6 in QD rings for predators and a Weaver 6.5-20 for colony critters. So far it has shot everything I've fed it in small groups.

I think it's a winner.

I could and still can't get by the "genuine hardwood" stock. They do shoot well though, or at least the 4 I've seen.
