remington 700 bolts

jofus said:
why are people selling their remington bolts without the action

One reason could be that they replaced their factory Remington bolt with a custom bolt, like a PT&G) and are trying to recoup some of the investment by selling their old one to someone who needs it.

in worst case scenario they've worn away the diameter at the handle end and either need to sleeve the bolt to get the tolerance back or replace it and are passing their problem on to unsuspecting buyers...

spook

I believe you're being overly cynical. I've seen some Remingtons with a LOT of rounds thru them and don't recall seeing one with the bolt worn to the point of needing to be replaced.

I think Spotcheck is "spot on" on this one. Used Remington bolts were a high-demand short-supply item until Dave Kiff started to make his new ones.

This one was listed as "Good Shape,Almost new"..... yet It literally rolled in the action when the handle was lifted. I'll put it on the lathe and make a sliding sleeve for it some day.
Kiffs replacement bolt measured almost .010 heavier. Last bolt I'll ever buy that I cant put calipers on.

I agree in part, but when I gave my action to my gunsmith for a custom build he checked it out and told me all it needed done to get it into blue print speck . As I could not afford one of the custom actions I decided to go with the 700 Remington and let my smith bring it into speck. The bolt is under size .My smith will sleeve it for less than I can buy a replacement bolt for, and it will be trued to my action. A new Remington bolt should be at least .700", mine was .685",and as you can imagine sloppy in the action.

Well Spook, I measured five M700 bolts and they measured .690, .692, .695, .695, and .696 which is very much average. I don't consider any of them to be worn out and they work just fine for a hunting rifle.

Yat, where did you get that .700+ figure for a new Rem bolt?

Have you guys ever had a M98 Mauser? If you think that .010 is too much play then you're in for a shock.

I think it was Midway USA that said the 700 replacement bolts measure .700" anyway my smith said it was under size and with to much play in it to make a good custom gun with it.Building a 30BR for competition.

I agree - for a custom re-barrel, the bolt should be sleeved or have Dave Kiff make one to your specs. For the average every day hunting rifle, they are fine. Maybe even an advantage because they won't bind up if you get a little dirt on them. That's one reason the 98 Mausers were made so sloppy.

I think you'll like the 30 BR.

I may have spoken out of turn so to speak. Midway USA sells a bolt body that measures .700 :

"Material: Heat treated chrome moly steel

Finish: In the White

Features: Replacement bolt body for Remington 700

Gunsmithing Required: Yes

Notes:

1-piece bolt body

Bolt handle not included

Does not include ejector assembly, utilizes Remington ejector

Does not include extractor, utilizes Remington new style extractor or available with SAKO extractor cut

Bolt body is ground to a nominal .700" diameter

Larger diameter bolt body offers an excellent fit in the action normally eliminating action boring and bolt sleeving for a no-play fit

Excellent bolt for switch barrel projects "

Those bolt bodies from Midway cost $124.00. My gunsmith is gonna sleeve my bolt for less than $100.00 and rebore my action if needed. The rifle was used a lot! used for Camp Perry etc high power matches. It was a .223 with a 1-8 twist barrel and shot ok but not what I wanted. I wanted something other than 6ppc for score matches in IBS, besides that my wife reclaimed her 6ppc after I shot a 250 8x with it 2nd to last shoot of last year at 200 yds.
