jofus said:why are people selling their remington bolts without the action
I agree in part, but when I gave my action to my gunsmith for a custom build he checked it out and told me all it needed done to get it into blue print speck . As I could not afford one of the custom actions I decided to go with the 700 Remington and let my smith bring it into speck. The bolt is under size .My smith will sleeve it for less than I can buy a replacement bolt for, and it will be trued to my action. A new Remington bolt should be at least .700", mine was .685",and as you can imagine sloppy in the action.Cheechako said:spook
I believe you're being overly cynical. I've seen some Remingtons with a LOT of rounds thru them and don't recall seeing one with the bolt worn to the point of needing to be replaced.
I think Spotcheck is "spot on" on this one. Used Remington bolts were a high-demand short-supply item until Dave Kiff started to make his new ones.

I think it was Midway USA that said the 700 replacement bolts measure .700" anyway my smith said it was under size and with to much play in it to make a good custom gun with it.Building a 30BR for competition.Cheechako said:Well Spook, I measured five M700 bolts and they measured .690, .692, .695, .695, and .696 which is very much average. I don't consider any of them to be worn out and they work just fine for a hunting rifle.
Yat, where did you get that .700+ figure for a new Rem bolt?
Have you guys ever had a M98 Mauser? If you think that .010 is too much play then you're in for a shock.

I may have spoken out of turn so to speak. Midway USA sells a bolt body that measures .700 :Cheechako said:Yat
I agree - for a custom re-barrel, the bolt should be sleeved or have Dave Kiff make one to your specs. For the average every day hunting rifle, they are fine. Maybe even an advantage because they won't bind up if you get a little dirt on them. That's one reason the 98 Mausers were made so sloppy.
I think you'll like the 30 BR.
