Remington 700 BDL varmint special

Look
NICE,.. ^^^^
Mine LOOKS Exactly Like this One, only Has, a bit Smaller Diameter Barrel for,.."Walking Varmint" Use !
8 lbs approx and Shoots "Most",.. Good loads,.. SUB 1/2 MOA ( a Beautiful, 1981 Model )
Main Use, Splodin' Sage Rats w/ 50 V-Maxes ( BRAKED ! ) 2nd Use, Yotes to about, 350 yards with, 55's / 60's !

When farmers/ranchers, in Western Kansas, called me, and needed thinning of the Whiley population, I used my VLS 22-250 for moderate range, 25-06 custom for longer ranges, and a Rem 1100 MAG shotgun (close range) pointing down wind for "incoming" following vixen urine as a cover scent!!! Most were taken with the 22-250 over a mutilated calf carcassll Idaho-Lefty is correct in using the 55 and 60grain projos in the 1:14 twist Remington varmint rifles!!! They are awesome on rolling coyotes!!! I like the VLS(Gen 2 stock) over the BDL VS because of the added weight and forward shift of the balance of the 2 rifles and added quality of the E series actions!! Yes, I have had the 22-250 in the BLD VS, the VLS, and VS (synthetic)!!! I'll take the VLS any day!!! 2nd choice would be the CLASSIC BDL VS which is awesome in it's own way!!! The straight up VS (POS cheap synthetic noodle rigidity stock) would be my last choice!! Remington action quality also improved during the VLS/VS (synthetic) era (E series serial number prefix) after the BDL VS was dropped in the Remington varmint/target lineup!!!!

If I would have kept the E series VS (synthetic), it would have been restocked, and epoxy bedded, with a heavier custom laminated target and make it a shooter and not worry about a collector!!! After all, you can always set the barreled action back in the synthetic stock for selling!!!!

Most varmint shooters use a bipod on their BDL, BDL Varmint Special, VS or VLS.

Danny

ALL OF MY BDL VS, VLS, and VS varmint rifles have/had bipods!!! And, test loads were shot from the bipod/prone position, not the bench!!!
I used a Harris bipod on my 7-08 BDL VS for taking big game too (Deer and Antelope)!!! Used it to take over a half dozen Prairie Dog Pups all stacked on the mound about 50 yards away with ONE Sierra 120 grainer!!! Pup parts flew every direction!!! That was a blast!!!!! Pups are nothing more than bags of water and really "POP" with the right bullets!!!! In early season varmint hunting, the shooter tries to POP as many PUPs as possible!!! I varmint hunted for several years in Western Kansas until most PD towns were eliminated using Phostoxin Pellets/Tablets!!! There are a couple of small towns left!!! However, Wyoming is a great state for the varmint shooters!!!

I'm hopefully going to spend time next year, in blasting PDs in Wyoming!!! That is, if I can get my Macular Degeneration (fluid, not dry) under control!!! Have not fired a single round since September 2024!!! I'm on 9 injections in the right eye to date!!! Until then, I can't shoot a high power or would risk Retina Detachment!!!! And it's primarily in my scope eye!!!! It's tough not being able to hunt or work on test loads!!!

The early . 22 rimfire 40X’s were built on Remington 722 actions than they switched to the REM 700
actions. Again as far as I know all 40X’s used short actions.
A couple long action 40X’s are said to exist but I never have seen any or pictures of any.

Yep. I have an old (three-digit serial) straight bolt 721-based 40X rimfire. That, and the rest, are short actions. I've read of the long actions, but pictures remain elusive. I've never seen one.

Edited to correct lousy keyboarding discipline....

People always kept telling me that they never made a VS in 6mm Remington, but I saw one in a gun shop once (new). I am sure that they were very very limited production. I passed on it and bought my first VS in .223 Remington. Nowing then what I know now, I would have bought the 6mm Remington example.

I am too tired to look in my Gun Digests. Do you guys know the order from oldest to newest of the Rem 700 varmint models?
That's probably tough to do by memory. As far as I know, the BDL Varmint Special was first, then the VS, then the VLS. there were variations within the VLS. After the VLS were some models, and I can't remember even one of them even though I have one. What I have is similar to a VS, but it has a blued fluted barrel with a different stock than the VS. The stock is tan spiderweb composite but it has a palm swell. The forend design might be slightly different. Mine is LH. i have been told that these are probably scarce. The SPS is in there after the VLS, too. I have some of those as well.
