Remington 700 BDL varmint special

She's a "Keeper" for, the Walk and stalk, shoot over, Stix Varmint hunting that, I do. ( Or Bipod off, Bench for S. Rats ).
I paid $300 for it with, 2 Boxes of Ammo and Dies, MANY Years ago ( 1992 ish ) and it was, practically, UN-Fired, then.
My buddy owned, a Pawn shop and called me right away, when it came, Out of Pawn, as he knew, I was, a "Lefty".
I've always kept the Velocities, below, Max speed ( It likes, the 3,500- 3,550 Max. FPS 'Range", real Well ).

They were stamped with VS and VLS, stamped model number, with hand written serial numbers!!!! Remington advertised these guns as Varmint specials in there sales aids!!! At that time, mom and pop part time gun shops bought the guns through SHOTGUN NEWS, a publication that came out bimonthly!!! It was 1/2 size newsprint with 30 to 40 pages of ads!!! Getting a gun then, no background check, walk out of the shop with guns, no waiting period!!!!
VS = Varmint Synthetic
VLS = Varmint Laminated Stock

What year is that book for those prices?

Ill buy every NIB Varmint Special Walnut stock for 450 new in box
1999
My VS 7-08 NIB was $325.00 including the FFL fee and taxes and a 6.5-20x44 gold ring heavy duplex Leupold scope was $200.00 in mid '80s. Yeah, A rifle, scope mounts and scope, bipod, a sling, and case for less than cost of just a rifle today!!! Pound of powder, $9-12; BR-2 primers $12.50/1000; Sierra 7mm 160 SBT gamekings, $12.00/100; FEDERAL 308 Nickel Match Brass, $2.25/20!!!!! A brick of 22's were $5/500. And some hardware stores and all gun shops had everything in stock!!! Shop around a little, it could be on sale!!! That is why us old timers can shoot!!!! Very cheap to burn up rounds in an afternoon and get lots of target practice with different guns!!!!

I wouldn't put much faith in the accuracy of what you find in that book. It is very general and full of lots of errors and omissions.

What book am I showing?? Which book are you referring to that has inaccuracies?? Which gun value book are you talking about??? Need Proof!!! I have several!!! Can go get old shooters bibles and it will show the same thing!!!! Your talking to a Boomer, who lived in that era and studied the Big Green's model 700 varmint and 40 series Target rifles!!!! I had 2, my dad in law had 2 and now in the procession of my brother in law (223 and 7-08)! I know for a fact, through fliers, catalogs, magazine ads, gun value books, magazine articles, and over 50 1,000+ table gun shows starting in mid 80s!!! The notation is CORRECT clear up to 1999!!! Your also dealing with a collector of rare target rifle, mostly military relics!!! Here is another book!!!!!!!!
The 1st model 700 varmint special (VS) was introduced in 1962!!! Everything was Walnut until 1994 synthetic (VSS, VS SS, VS SF), 1995 laminate (VLS)!!! Over 30 years were walnut deluxe (ADL) and walnut extra deluxe (BDL)!!!

True. Example, the Rem LSS. The LSS is a Laminated Stainless Steel action and barrel but it is not a heavy varmint contour. I have one that was originally a 300 Win mag that I used for my 7 Blaser mag build and still have the factory barrel and they were a 24in SS maybe about a #3 contour barrel.

Any of the true Rem "Varmint Special" rifles I've ever seen looked exactly like a Rem BDL custom deluxe except they all had 24in heavy bull barrels that were nearly if not straight taper that were noticeably larger and easy to spot over just the regular varmint/sendero contour rifles.

My dad had bought two of them both in 22-250 in around 1974. Sold one to his friend that still has it in it's original configuration but unfortunately my dad used his for a donor gun to build something else. I tried to buy the one he sold his buddy but he won't turn loose of it. Maybe some day he'll change his mind.

When you talk about rare Varmint Specials, the 25-06 is at the top of the list. It's the single long action Varmint Special ever offered.

No factory Varmint Specials ever came through with stainless barrels. Dealers could order a Varmint Special and have the Custom Shop fit a different barrel. But they were neither cataloged Varmint Specials nor true Custom Shop rifles...neither fish nor fowl. Documentation is everything if you own one of these.

Good shootin' -Al

Big Green called the contour HEAVY and it started the tapered from the camber round length at 1.25" and at the muzzle end, it was 0.82" on the 24" barrels!!! It was a straight taper!!!
