Remington 700 action problem

Did they square the face of the action before sticking the barrel on? if so good chance Rem wont touch it. Either way send it to a reputable smith and be done with it, quick fix.

what have you decided to do,,,as was said earlier you have a 900$ stock and 600$ bbl (blank+gunsmithing) and a 300 $ Remington action,,,,the factory will do you no good,,,just weld the hole in the back and re-drill it,,,or remove the action and try another Rem action and see if the fit and headspace are acceptable,,,good luck if the acton and or bolt are "trued",,,,what a mess,,,you can see why most folks are using custom actions which operate much smoother ,before they pour $$$ down the rat hole,,,,Roger

Your plan of pulling barrel and sending back is certainly a good option, and if they won't give acceptable recourse, you could sell it here in the classifieds with full disclosure for a small loss I'd say.

Or use it in a cheaper stock with a different rifle for a future project. I have a rifle named "Patches" as it's built of parts that weren't the best fit and finish wise and needed quite a bit of rigging. It's many different colors/finishes/etc. It's a good hunting rifle, and shoots well.

Obviously, you are being smart about your situation and will make the decision that is correct for you.

Yours is an interesting problem, and my viewpoint of being in South Africa and not having recourse to a factory return would be to fix it by milling out a slot and either welding that up or s/solder a replacement piece of steel back in. Then drill and tap a new hole.

But seeing as you can return it and Remington SHOULD replace it, measure from the receiver face to bolt face with a depth gauge, and ask them to supply the new action with that dimension. It's the least they can do and the headspace should not be that far off.

So after subtracting the diameter of the rods I used to get the measurement of the action holes, the stainless action is 6.477" which would make it 23 thou off, and my blued action is 6.494" which is where I originally had the 17 thou because I was only comparing them side by side rather than getting the true center to center of each.

well i'll ask again where did you buy the action
why cant you return it to the dealer for replacement and let them deal with Remington

If the action has been modified Remington won't warranty it. Of course the modification has to be noticeable, so if the only thing done was squaring the front of the receiver you may be OK.

You would have to think that any manufacturer with an issue like this would be eager to get it off the street. I sent some defective rings back to Kelby once that had come on a rifle I bought. Jim Kelby called me and informed me they were Spanish knockoffs, told me the differences then replaced them with his. Said he didn't want them out there being mistaken for Kelbys. With the Internet you can't be nickle wise and dollar stupid with your brand name. The original poster may paint it yellow, screw on a factory Rem barrel and stick it in the ground as a tomato stake and blast pics over 10 shooting sites!

I installed a mini chassis Manners stock for a guy and the hole spacing was off in the stock. I had to enlarge the rear hole in the stock to get it to work correctly. I talked to Tom Manners about it and he said he would have had to do the same thing. I could get a Remington to fit but the Pierce action that was going in the stock was a touch too tight. I doubt I'd waste my time with Remington short of letting them know if it's truly off.
