remington 222 40x information

I have a 1070s remington varmit special 222 that i want to have rebarreled. years ago remington made a 20 inch 40x in 222 . Does any one know what the twist rate was and did the shorter barrel loose any accuracy from longer barrel 222s. The rifle wil be used by my grand son for 1&2 hundred yard target shooting.

Don't think Remington ever made a 222 that didn't have a 14 twist barrel. Pretty much every 224 caliber they sold was 14 except the 223's had 12 twist. Sure would think the 40-XBBR wasn't any different unless it was a special order with something different?

As for accuracy I doubt the 20" was any less accurate than the 27.25" used on the other 40-XB's. It was heavier/stiffer specifically for Bench Rest matches. So overall I would have to say barrel length 'normally' does not affect accuracy, only velocity! However I am sure someone will disagree with me.

i had one in the xbr 40x 222, aslo 6x47(222m) and both shot great, the bbls were 14 and handled the 53-55gr very well, for bes varmet 50bk and target 52/53match sierra .

I just rebarreled a rifle for a board member that wanted a light and short "truck" gun, in .222. Barrel was 20" long and gun was under 7lbs. It shot solid "threes" with virtually no load work. Load was 53gr Hornady Match bullet, just off the lands, on top of 24.6gr. of IMR4895. I didn't chrono the load but that little rifle is going to shoot just fine with the short tube.--Mike
