Remington 40X .222

Glad to see a thread I started almost 2yrs ago was brought back to life.

If anyone is interested.
I left the rifle alone as .222

Reformed some lapua 223 into 222 to start off with, shot IMR4064 with Sierra 52gr bullets.
Excellent results.

Most recently, new lapua 222 brass, CCI BR4, IMR4198 (18.5gr)
@100yds 10shts into .2" size groups
@200 yds 1.5 - 2" groups (anyone can tell me what possibly can be happening @200yds that the groups are opening up so much)
Almost countless little details.....Gotta keep thinking how to improve. IMHO
I once bought a longer bolt to replace my shorter stock forend stop so I could make the rifle a bit more front heavy in the bags. It did make a nice difference.

Maybe go up to 18.8 gr, & also adjust your seating depth a little.

I wouldn’t expect the bullets are coming apart. Something is broken or loose or it’s you and your bench setup.

What is happening at 200?

Wind, mirage, parallax, scope issues, bench manners, bullet selection.

Pick one and work on it.

I think the point has been made, but I would definitely leave it a 222, in fact if a new barrel was ever needed, it would have to be another 222 chamber in it. You sir have a very good friend, and quite the classic specimen!

I have an older Remington 700 in .222 Rem. All stock, even the trigger. This is the rifle that I won a lot of factory class matches with, and started me down the rabbit hole most commonly called "Benchrest" matches.
I hadn't shot this rifle for at least 20 years, and decided to drag it out to the range.

Yep! Still a keeper! My wife will probably sell this rifle for next to nothing some day after I'm gone...

If I ever DO rebarrel it, I will go with .222 Rem. again! Remember, this is NOT a custom rifle - completely STOCK - older Remington 700.

I had a 40x .222. It ended up becoming a .20 Vartarg. I already had a couple of Sako L46 Vixens in .222 at the time. Still do.

No, I have you beat. My heirs will sell my mint condition ADL in 222 for 450$. Then she will throw in four boxes of NOS Norma 222.
