Rem action accuracy

My question is if I build a br gun with all the same quality parts and quality work on a rem action can it be as accurate as a custom with same components? Not trying to start a debate of rem vs custom. What would make it less accurate, bolt design etc? The class I presently shoot only allows factory actions so I'm trying to decide my what to build next, modified or custom. Thanks

My Gunsmith is a HOF Benchrest member and all of his HOF Points were shot with a Remington Action

One thought regarding Remington actions and stocks. If you build a tube gun you will be essentially sleeving the action. Not saying it will shoot better or not but if you had the choice...

Research if the UBR modified class scores are on par with the Custom Class scores. In sanctioned group and VFS score competition, the blueprinted Factory actions are non-existent ....the very few that are campaigned don't make in to the upper half of the finishing order.
I've got 2 customs and 2 trued Remington 700 bench guns. The handling difference between the two in the bags is huge...and the customs actions are still worth what I paid for them....the 700's on resale will recoup only a fraction of what I outlayed for blueprinting. I find accuracy at the high end of load density (I load hot) and the customs take me to that upper plateau with less brass problems.

+1. I believe there is solid proof in LH's words. The winners in top competition all shoot custom built rigs. Why else would they spend the money if they could get the same results without the extra finite detailing that go into custom rigs? But there is one thing in LH's comments that caught my attention and that I never really gave thought too. And that is recouping what I spent. I have always been of the opinion that if I want "best accuracy", it ain't cheap and recouping my investment never entered my mind. And NO I'm not wealthy or have an endless pocket book. But when I want the best equipment and best results, I never give thought to how much I'm going to get back. All that really matters to me is what that target down range will look like after I've shot the course.

By the time you get a 700 action, then blue print it... for another $100-200 you can just have a custom..

I have 1 trued rem 700 action.. yes its nice. But not worth doing again.

It is very costly to get the bolt, and barrel to be straight and concentric to each other on a Rem. Just try an action like a Borden Rimrock and then you will understand. Not all custom actions are the same. I own a Hart, BAT. and Borden. I also own a Savage Target, I like the feel of a Rem better.

REM ACTION HAS SURE MET ALL MY NEEDS SOME 50 DIFFERENT ONES, STILL SHOOTING BUGHOLES WITH REM ACTIONS, BUILT A LOT OF SWITCH BARREL RIFLES

Are you winning matches? My Remingtons kill deer and hogs. It will cost you more to bring a Remington receiver to the same specs as a custom and a lot less resale value. You can't blueprint a 700 properly for a couple hundred dollars.
By the way, Hippy Jim, who is your HOF shooter and gunsmith.

Accuracy/precision is not all in the action but for a specific purpose one needs a specific action to accommodate the demands of the task. Any rifle can be more or less accurate/precise with any action.
You don't say what the build is meant to do for you.
Benchrest? Answer is no. Build on a custom with (if you are right-handed) RBLPRE configuration.
F-Class? I would hazard that a 700 could do the work of a custom in FT-R matches.
Precision/Tactical? Of course it can. Not unusual to find a 700 action build at/near the top of the heap.
I am having a rifle built at this time. The original plan was to spend $1,000+ for a custom action but I got an older model 700 with tactical bolt knob, all the necessary pins, recoil lug, springs, etc, and a full truing job for $450. I'll build more ammo for the difference.

I am a little confused , as usual. Are you saying you have built many switch barrel guns off Remington actions? I had the impression that unless they were pinned so as to establish a fixed headspace which could then be duplicated ,at least by the same gunsmith, that rebarreling on a Remington would require headspacing for each individual barrel using a recoil lug of variable thickness.I thought that if an aftermarket barrel came up for a Remington action ,that I could not rely on screwing that barrel on with the recoil lug from that action .
I have 4 guns built off of trued Remington actions and they all shoot very well.
However , one of the main reasons that I love my Pandas and Vipers is that if I see a barrel listed for sale for a Panda,or Grizzly II, or Kodiak, or Viper, assuming the bolt face is the same, with certain exceptions, I can screw it right on , bore sight and start shooting . I can change barrels and be shooting in 5 minutes . I think this is one of the most valuable aspects of the aftermarket actions.

YES DARREL ALL ACTION ARE PINNED 1/4 HOLLAND LUGS IF I FIND A BARREL I WANT I SET IT BACK RECHAMBER START SHOOTING MY NOT BE AS FAST AS YOU BUT THE POINT IS I'LL STILL GET TO SHOOT

I envy your ability to set them back yourself . A valuable skill which I do not have.

I am presently shooting UBR modified which is factory actions only. Thinking of another build and was wondering what causes a rem to be less accurate than a custom. I see the custom guys running left load right eject fast and beating the condition change, is it the differences in the actions or the way the actions run that makes the biggest difference?

In the UBR modified class that you're shooting in, are you scoring well in that class? Or have you reached a plateau and can't seem to score above like 255 or something? What are your best, and what are your average group sizes? Just curious. WD
