REM 700 PPC/ Grendel bolt face conversion

I want to convert a rem 700 bolt to use 6ppc size case heads .445" dia. I have heard that a 308 sized bolt will extract them but ejection is not good. I need to have reliable extraction and ejection. I would like to ask the readers here if anyone has successfully installed an m-16 style extractor in a 700 bolt to function with the .445" case head. If you have can you please share what ext. you used ( im guessing it would be the mini m-16 size for 308 sized case heads) Also do you simply mill the pocket about.014" deeper than the .473 case size TIA Tony

I can't comment on using an unmodified 473 boltface for PPC. I would modify it. I don't like the M16 style because it requires a large clearance between the bolt and the barrel nose. I prefer the sako that has less clearance requirements (still more than the stock extractor). Is the barrel already chambered? If so you might want to measure the ID of the inlet. If not, then no problem, you can machine it for whatever extractor you choose. Or maybe you have the capability to modify the already chambered barrel. Good luck and PM me if you're interested in a sako extractor install. --Jerry

It's been 20+ yrs since I modified one , but , I use to use an extractor made for the 35 remington model 600 . If I remember correctly , it was just as easy as replacing the extractor . I'm not sure the 35 rem extractor is even available anymore .

Well I ordered a m-16 extractor set today. Ill take some measurements when I get it in my hands but im thinking its going to get set a little deeper ( toward bolt centerline ) than print shows for the .473" bolt face. Ill check to see how much the ext. extends past the bolt body if at all so I can keep the bolt nose counterbore dia. as small as possible. Barrel not chambered or set up yet

Are you going to machine out the old extractor recess and solder in a steel ring?

Butch,
Thanks for your polite disagreement. I will look at it again. --Jerry

The Sako extractor is held in by a spring loaded detent plunger. The M16 extractor is held in by a crosspin making it much harder to blow out on a case head failure. There is a mini M16 extractor available that minimizes the slot width to fit it in the bolt head which makes for a somewhat more secure installation.

My solution to the bolt head problem is to install a Savage style head which can be had in any case head size from PTG. It utilizes the sliding plate style extractor which works well and is easy to repair. Blow out is impossible if the Savage bolt shroud is used behind the head. Properly installed, the bolt head is slightly flexible which allows the head locking lugs to always bear evenly on the receiver abutments. Plus, the head is easily exchanged for a different size if the rifle caliber is changed. FWIW, a standard .473 head will work with a PPC case if a new, longer extractor is made to reach the smaller ext. groove.
