Rem 700 + HV barrel, free floated vs barrel bedding?

Hi all,

I have a factory standard Remington 700 SA in 308, and would like to install it with Bartlein 26" HV (7.45lbs).
For best accuracy, should I go free floated barrel? Or bedding the barrel? What's the pros and cons between them?
Any thoughts gentlemen?

Thank you

Ed

I have always had best results with a good glassed action with the chamber part of the barrel glassed but the rest of the barrel free floated.

In the old days, the mark of a well fitted stock was how tightly the wood mated with the action and barrel. Today, most of us free float the barrel. Some will free float the entire barrel while others free float from the chamber forward. The theory is that a free-floating barrel will be more consistent over a shot string due to no change in the pressure on the barrel as it heats up. I believe a free-floating barrel is the best answer.

Thank you for all the replies, much appreciate it.
If it's free floated, would the action thread will hold the barrel weight just fine? Might be a silly question but with that barrel weight, any chance the action warped in the long run?

Thank you

A lot of 1.250 barrels are hung off of 700 actions with no problems doing it....
Bed the action, leave to complete barrel floating...
