Rem 582 - Can I???

Nodak7mm

Team Lefse
I still have my first 22, a Rem 582 tube feed. Its not beat up, but I would sure like some one who specializes in this particular action (580 series) to basically smooth it up and have the trigger stoned/worked.

I am considering rebarreling (which is something I can do with my meager machining skills) & maybe drop it in a Don Stith br stock. Why? Cause I want to.

Is there a smith out there does do magic on that series rem rimfire?

Thanks.

Rod

the Rem 580/1/2 are great actions. I've never fooled with a 582 but it uses the same trigger as the others. Brian Volker (sp) does wonders for that type trigger. google him and I'm sure you'll find him easily.
I am curious are you planning on converting to a single shot or leave it the way it is?

The 580 series rifles are a great platform to build on.
The triggers are easy to install a lighter spring, and drill and tap a set screw in the backside of the trigger housing. the triggers can be reduced to around 1lb pull.
I removed the pinned barrel and threaded the inside of the receiver.
I fitted a 17 caliber 1-9tw barrel, and chambered it in 17 HM2.
I cut a coned breach, and an 11deg target crown. The stock is a Stith type, laminated IR50/50 legal sporter.
I still need to drill and tap a second action screw(one thing the 580 series is lacking)

I dont mean to hijack this thread but Im thinking about doing something similiar with a 580 action.

Would a green mountain 10/22 barrel be suitable to being threaded into a 580 or would the threading in the both the action and barrel make it too small? would a pinned and loctite installation be better?

If you were to remove the tenon (cut it off) from the 10/22 barrel and and cut threads on a strait portion of barrel, it would work fine. Unfortunately, you have the dovetail clamp in the way. I`d have to see the barrel to see if you could make it work.

would the 10/22 barrel tennon fit into the 580 reciever though. assuming one doesnt thread barrel or reciever?

the 1022 shank will have to be turned down to fit. I can recall how much off the top of my head though. I have found red loctite works well as opposed to threading.
