Redding Type S Neck sizing die for .243?

Hey all! I want to purchase a Redding Type S neck sizing die set for my .243 Win. My question is, are there bushing sizes correct? My loaded round measures .2715 so I'm thinking of going with the .269 bushing. My question is that will a .269 busing leave me with a .269 outside neck diameter. It seems like I read on here, not too long ago, that some fellows were having problems with bushings not being numbered correctly. Thats why I'm asking. For what its worth also, my neck diameter of a fired case is .276 so I realize the brass is going to be worked quite a bit. Wish it were a .274 neck chamber but, it is what it is. Thanks for the help!

Mike

Your outside neck diameter will be .269 if you use a .269 bushing. If you use Lapua brass it won't be worked that much and the brass will hold up to it.

Thanks Hillbilly! Now I know which bushing to order. I have considered using Lapua brass but, I must adimit that I'm too cheap to buy it ;)! I'm using Fed brass right now and I have to be honest, I don't have any complaints. Some day I will step up and buy Lapua brass. Probably when I have my first barrel chambered in 6mmBR ;)! Thanks!

Mike: I maintain a "correction" chart for all my bushings, showing the stamped ident diameter, and the actual diameter of the case necks, measured with a micrometer, after sizing. A few are right on, most will size .001" to .0015" under the claimed diameter.

So what you're saying Frank is that if I use a .269 bushing, it may be dead on or it may size the neck to .268" or .2675"? This makes me want to get .270, .269, and .268 bushings. Appreciate the help Frank!

Mike

Mike: Yes, most of my bushings, both Redding & Wilson, size a little smaller than the ident. That's the main reason I avoid buying the very expensive $28 bushings and use the plain steel at $11 each. More bushing choices, less cost. It would really P.M.O. to spend that much on a bushing and then find it's a different size than needed, then have to return it, or trade, or sell. For my .272" necks (as an example) I'll usually have a .269, .268 & .267, and I can cover all the bases. .262 neck bushings are .259, 258 & 257. I don't believe these measured neck diameter differences are related to the brass, since I will get the same dimension with virgin, 15x loaded or 30x loaded: all the same diameters, so it's gotta be the actual bushing size. Necks are kept clean so it also cannot be a buildup of carbon.

Jo: I have a Redding std FL die already and the problem is that, this a tightly headspaced chamber. The brass actually shrinks when I shoot it. I have tried FL sizing brass in the past and it just doesn't seem to turn out right so I want to just neck size it. My Lee neck sizing die won't size the brass small enough to hold a bullet. A loaded round measures .2715" at the neck and my Lee neck sizing die only sizes the neck down to .2710". Only gives me .0005" of neck tension, not nearly enough. All that being said I would go with the type S FL die but, just not worth the trouble. I am kinda considering a Forster bushing bump neck sizing die though! Are those any good or not?

Mike

You want to know the single bushing size to order? I'd suggest you think of the problem differently. First, brass changes after every sizing. So, what worked after the first sizing doesn't work after the 10th sizing. Second, manufacturers work within "tolerances" and what is labeled as .270 may or may not measure up to that number. Third, you are going to want to experiment with different amounts of neck tension. Bottom line, get the complete range of bushings that allows you to both solve today's problem and have options to solve tomorrow's problem.

scotharr: Thanks for the heads up on the brass changing throughout its life. I'm hoping I can address all the potential neck sizing issues with 3 or 4 bushings. At $13.95 a piece I don't want to have too many of them just laying around ;)!

don't ever be shy in calling redding themselves. great people and they explain the tech in layman's terms. even i could understand what they were telling me after a few questions. their customer service is second to none.

Redding or Forster will do...

they are both good...I use Redding becuse they work in concert with my chamber dims. and my Kiff reamer......
It is a common occourance for "gunsmiths" to make a chamber short or tite or at or below "SAMMI specs" thinking they are doing you a favor and "better" work than the other guy.....it complicates loading for that firearm beyond their feeble minds.....if anything the chamber should be a thou. or two on the deep or big side to allow the die to be adjusted to "fit".....you can grind some mtl. of the shell holder or the die to solve the gunsmiths problem....Roger

Maybe this will help you in a less expensive manner. Just take the Lee die apart and chuck up the mandrel in a drill. Use 1000-2000 grit paper to get it down to the size you want.

I thought about doing that rain but, knowing my luck I would take to much material off and be screwed anyways ;)! Have a Redding type S neck sizing die on the way with .270, .269, and .268 bushings. I should be able to get the job done now.

On a different note, how much extra does Sinclair charge for shipping powder? I have some powder coming from them and I get the $25.00 hazardous fee but, when I checked out it said the total shipping was "to be determined"! Is this the norm when purchasing powder and/or primers from them? Thanks!

Mike

It really isn't hard and you don't have anything to lose. Just use 1000-2000 grit paper and you'll get there eventually. I did this and I still hold less than .002 total runout on my loaded rounds.

Well folks, got my Redding Type S Neck die and bushings yesterday. I must say that this is a very nice die to work with. I still have a little tweaking to do yet because I can't get it to size the neck all the way down to the neck shoulder junction. May have to take some material off of the shell holder. Frank, you were right. The bushing sizes the necks down about .0015" smaller than what the number says on the bushing. I put the .270 bushing in and the necks came out .2685" leaving me with .003" neck tension. Thanks again all for the help!

Most type "S" dies will NOT size all the way down to the bottom of the neck...it is the nature of the beast.....that is why some individuals hav trubl when forming wildcat cases with this type of die.....dont worry about it, just adjust the die to size the case body properly to fit your chamber, and the neck will be sized aprox .200"....Roger
PS,,,I usuall take out the de-capping rod and bushing and size the case to fit the chamber....then put in the bushing and de-cap unit...for the total resize once the fit is rite....!!!

Roger: I may be a little confused but, this is just a neck sizing die, not a FL die. Not quite understanding the removal of decapping rod and bushing? Unless your saying take these out to set the die up properly? If this die will only size about .200" of the neck, I'm alright with that :)! Also, I remove the sizing button from the decap rod and am just relying on the bushing for the sizing of the neck. Were it virgin brass, I would have the sizing button on!
