Recommend a rifle rest......please!!!!!

The Rock BR has a good heavy base, but the top is suspect and it could get you in trouble at a range that shoots level or downhill. It is too tall. You would have to have a very tall rear bag. The Bald Eagle is much superior and about the same price.

very true... been there and done that.... I had to have a rear bag made for mine.

It might come as a surprise to some folks, but the IBS 600 yard "Shooter of the Year" shot his matches with a Caldwell Rock BR rest last year!
He has modified it, but that's what Andy Ferguson shot with last year!andy who cald.jpg

Might want to take a look at a Greenlaw Rest. Dan Greenlaw builds custom rests with a very reasonable price and comes in variations of your choice. They are pictured at his website www.drgreenlawmachining.com . I've had/have three of his rests (and I don't compete anymore) and know of several Benchrest shooters around the US who have his rests. If nothing else, worth the look for comparison. IN case you have questions, you can call Dan on the phone as he's a super good guy to talk to.

I will second what Alex has said. Dan is a great guy that will take the time to answer your questions and his products are first rate. I have one of his "Model B" rests that doesn't get used and it pains me to look at it when I see it. I really should put it up for sale so someone can enjoy it.

And half of the HOF short range shooters still in the game shoot off the same 40 year old Hart rest and same bags...and are still collecting points. The OP is new to bench shooting and he most likely will not be aware of a rests inherent deficiencies. It's a lot easier to pinpoint somethings amiss in your bench equipment with a high powered scope sitting on top of a rifle expected to agg in the .2's @ 100.

Again fellas, thanks a million for all the tips and information...this morning I ordered a Sinclair Heavy Varmint AP. The AP stands for "all purpose", it comes with an adjustable top and front bag. It is supposed to adjust to many different sizes of forend widths. I also ordered the Protektor Dr. Bag with leather ears for the rear.
I talked to their product guy and told him what I was doing and he first recommended the Caldwell Lead Sled. I have already tried one of those and cannot shoot comfortably with it. I was about to thank him for his time when he called my attention to the AP.
I also looked very hard at the Bald Eagle cast iron which is supposed to be on sale right now, but when I went to the website they only had the aluminum ones on sale. Not much for a bait and switch so I moved on.
I will definitely let everyone know how this rest works out asap!!!!!!! And again, thanks a million.

A Cowan rest is a good solid adjustable rest that will cover all your needs and will teach a high school kid the art of becoming a machinist. Sinclair's basic rest is also a great rest.

Well fellas, I got the rest and rear bag today. I filled the bags with sand and even though the wind was howling mad I had to go out and shoot. I definitely like the way the front bag can clamp up on the forend. I shot a 1/2" group with a sporter rifle that I was previously lucky to get 1 1/2" groups out of and again, the wind was ridiculous. It will really anchor a rifle and help hold it dead still. Wish I would have bought this thing years ago!!! Thanks again for all the replies!!!!!

Does he still do that? I havent seen a new one in a long time. Last i heard somebody waited a year and never got one. Didnt lose money just never got completed

I am in need of a good rifle rest/benchrest. Hesitant to call it a "bench" rest because I am not competing, but would like to be able to shoot the best group possible with my rifles. Rifles vary from heavy barrel varmint/tactical type to light weight hunting rifles to rimfires and slug guns.
Nothing formal going on, just would like a nice functional rest. Not really worried about the cost, but don't want to pay for bells and whistles I wont need/use. I realize it wont turn me into a fantastic shot, but for sight in and some Sunday afternoon fun/work at the range what is the best rest??? There are probably others out there that have this same question. There doesn't seem to be a lot of info on the hows and whys of bench/rifle rests. Interested in the rear bag as well. Also, please take a minute to tell us why you chose the gear you are recommending. Thanks a million for any info, it is greatly appreciated!!!!!
Contact Bob Pastor AKA "The Viper Rest" he is a Forum member that builds the best and most sturdy rest on the Planet. Boy, with his rest, NOTHING MOVES. I've had several rests in my 65 years of shooting but I've found this rest, is rock solid and he will custom make it for you. robpas@bloomingdalecom.net

Dusty it's been a couple years since I talked to him last. He may be out of the business by now. That will be unfortunate he made a good solid product for a reasonable price.

I talk with him every Friday night. HE IS NOT OUT OF BUSINESS. In fact, he has made several customized rests in the last few months. He has just finished re tooling his operation and his turnaround time is much shorter than before and still the same quality product. He has also added some popular gunsmithing tooling to his product line.
Bob can also be reached by telephone 269-521-3671

That is great i was always happy those kids made rests for their program and steered lots of people to them when they were getting started

Great news. Thanks BOBC for keeping us informed. His rests are quality products and I'm glad he's still in the business.
