So I recently acquired a 700 in 30-06 from a buddy for a pretty good price. I want to build a 25-06 ackley on it. After looking at it, the blueing is nice and doesn’t look abused. The stock has some bumps and scratches but not much wear on the bolt or raceway. Even the jeweling on the bolt looks good. Anyway, should I keep it original and sell it and buy another action or just go ahead and break it down, sell of the parts I don’t need? Point me in the right direction. Thanks, Phil.

That's a tough call. Me, I'd keep it original and keep it and also buy another action to build your new rifle.

I have a hard time taking apart older rifles that are still mostly "original". Yes that one has some mods, but it's not completely frankensteined.

Sell it and buy an action to build your new rifle.

If your set on a 25-06, go for it. Pac-nor or a good gunsmith can contour a barrel to match the one you have. Stock up on the 25 cal bullets you will use and go for it.
Like Rick said that rifle in that condition is begging to be used for hunting. Enjoy it. either keep the 06 barrel or put it out for sale.

A cautionary tale... They say never shoot the donor. I bought a 30-06 M70 to have rebored to 375 Whelen. Figured I'd get the rifle squared away before the rebore, so bought a new stock. It was like a shotgun before but in the new stock it shoots cloverleafs at 100 yds & dandelions at 200. A case full of N160 & 155 Scenars @ 3000fps. Guess I have an '06 now.

I do have 30-06 rounds laying around.

Are you a big game hunter anticipating a trip out West or Canada to hunt Elk, Moose, Bear, Mule Deer, etc.?

If so, I would keep the 30 06. This is one of the all-time great big game cartridges, a little much for eastern white tail but a little more is better than a little less. With the 06 you can hunt anything in North America with maybe the exception of brown bear.

However, if your heart is set on the 25 06 AI, then go for it because if you don't, you'll always wonder what you missed.
