Rebarreling a Savage (LRPV)

Has anyone had experience rebarreling their Savage (Model 12, large shank) to 6 BR. If so what barrel maker and what profile did you go with, I have to keep weight under 13 1/2 lbs.

Billy, I have used almost all the different barrel makers, all have been excellent shooters. Some for BR, others for varmints. I like SS so I don't have to blue afterwards. Any Questions email me, mikendi@shawneelink.net

I have used Lilja, Hart Krieger Broughton and Brux. The last (2) Brux barrels have been excellent. Not that the others weren't good but these (2) Brux barrels are something Special!!!!!!

I have a Lothar Walther 6br 8 twist varmint contour that is my most accurate savage barrel. I have also spent the most time with it at the range, but it took little load development. I also have 2 shilens in .243, and .308 (both very good) and 2 douglas in 22br and 25-06. All are very capable varmint rifles. My brother and a buddy each have Criterion barrels in 260 and a 6.5-284 and those are both very accurate as well, even out to 1000yds. These are all prefit barrels too.

My 6br has shot .5" groups at 300yds. They might have blown together that day, but it has done it and gives me the confidence that I know it can do it. I think if you stick with a top of the line brand (Brux, Bartlein, Kreiger/Criterion, Shilen, etc..) you can't really go wrong.

I should also mention these were all small shank if that matters to you. The 25-06, 6.5-284, and 308 are full bull and the others are varmint contours. You would probably need a varmint contour to make weight, depending on length of course.

The Criterion are very good. I have a full bull 223AI 8 tw shoots great

Billy, I have Mcgowan, shilen,Pacnor Douglas. They all produce accuracy as I expected however what I have settled on is Lilja. Interestingly the last time I talked to Dan Lilja he said if he had to choose any other barrel brand besides his he would use a Douglas. What Caliber is you Savage now?.
