Spacing of action mounting screws on Savage Model 12 LRPV

In “about” 2009 Savage apparently changed the spacing on the three action mounting screws used on the Model 12 LRPV and a few other models. I’m told this was done to keep the spacing consistent on all variations of that action. Probably a good enough idea in the long run, but it’s going to make things a bit complicated fitting from one stock to another. :P

Does anybody know what was involved in the change? ???

Apparently they did this at about the same time they went from the smooth barrel to the fluted barrel on the LRPV models.

In 2006 Savage started changing over the short actions from a stagard feed magazine to a center feed magazine in hope to solve feeding and reliability problems. To accomplish this change over Savage had to change the action screw spacing to accommodate the new magazine set up in the short actions. the long actions never changed spacing. The first guns to receive this magazine change over was the 22/250, 308, 243, and 7mm08 calibers. The Stevens 200 followed suit a couple of years latter. The 223/204 guns changed over to a center feed magazine in around 2008 completing the change over. To the best of my knowledge Savage never changed the screw spacing on the target (3 screw) action guns. The target actions came out around the same time as the change over, and the used the same screw spacing as the center feed guns. If it did affect the target action guns it would only be for maybe 1 year model. To the best of my knowledge the fist target actions came out in 2006.

Now the dual port target action that started production in 2009 they changed the screw spacing all together, so that they would eliminate the half rear pillar, they move the rear pillar forward and use a trigger guard off of a model 40 , but to the best of my knowledge Savage only did this on the dual ports, and never to the repeater or left port actions.

I was talking to Savage on the phone on Friday and they told me that in 2010 (they did not say WHEN in 2010) they changed the spacing on the actions used on the LRPV rifles to be exactly the same as the spacing on the Palma rifles. So if I understood the lady correctly, essentially now the actions and mounting screw spacing on ALL the single shot actions using the 3 screw system are the same.

So you could take an Savage LRPV rifle and stick it into a Savage Palma stock, or a Benchrest stock, or an F-Class stock, or visa versa.

That much I’m pretty sure I understood correctly.

What I’m not quite so sure about is my understanding of the actions themselves. I “think” she said that the single shot actions used in the Varmint rifles (LRPV) and the actions used in the Target rifles (Palma, Benchrest, F-Class, etc) had always been the same actions – BUT – they used different spacing on the three mounting screws. This recent change simply changed the spacing on the 3 screws used on the LRPV actions so they were the same as the Palma actions. In other words, they just use the Palma action now for all the single shot Target rifles and the single shot Varmint rifles.

I “think” that’s what she meant.

Does anybody know what the measurements of the Palma action are – and what the measurements of the LRPV action are? If I am right the action should be identical, but the old spacing of the three screws will be different.

The action they used to use in the LRPV was called the “short” action, and the action they used in the Palma was the “Palma” action.

Apparently now it’s all called the “Palma” action.

What I’m not sure of is whether the “Palma” action was simply the “short” action with different screw spacing – or if there were other differences as well.

Anyway, apparently the LRPV now uses the Palma action.

I hope that’s good – because I just ordered two of them. One in .223 and one in 6mmBR Norma. Both are left port right bolt.

Yes, I realize this post is almost 15 years old. Iv read other posts mentioning drilling the action or only using 2 action screws. Who is the Savage LRPV stock guru? Thanks.

Blue stock is newest action. Black with white is the oldest. Top action id different? 2,3 and 4 look the same.
Bottom black looks as though it would fit bottom wood stock. Why all the differences? Anyone?

All those in the pic are 4.4” screw spacing except for the bottom 2, which are 3.4”. Easy to tell by the extended trigger guard.

The change to the shorter screw spacing was done to allow for a full rear pillar on target models(f/tr, flclass, etc). Doing this they moved the front and rear screw in a 1/2”. Some people will have the action drilled for a 4.4 spacing as well so the action will fit stocks with either screw spacing.
The top rifle in your pic is a 4.4 target action mounted in a stock that was inletted for a 4.4 centerfeed action where there is no middle screw. A middle pillar could always be added, but IMO the middle screws are not really needed anyway.

Even though they make them in both spacings, the 4.4” actions still seem to be the preferred screw spacing among those doing custom builds. Mainly due to the increased stock options.
