Really small caliber no fooling

I stop by a shop here in WY to barrow a 14 Walker reamer, while I was there the owner picked up a barrel and handed it to me. It looked like a joke, there was this little tiny hole in the end, 12 caliber, after I said a few choice words about it, he said "oh that's the big one" then handed me another barrel.....10 caliber. I guess the plan is to neck down a 17 Hornady Hornet. Should be a real bug killer.

I have heard of 14 cal. but never anything smaller. I bet it was awesome just seeing it. Yes I agree "bug killer".....LOL ;D I wonder how fast and how accurate they would be?! :)

I cant say how fast or accurate they would be, but my 14, when there not being a pain in the rear shoot very well. Depending on bullet weight from 9 to 17 grain the speed can be unbelievable I can shoot a 9gr solid copper bullet out of my walker @4950fps with a fairly light load. They didn't shoot very well but holy cow it was almost 5000fps!

I have some .14/ .12/ .10 and .08 caliber bullets......

Cool to look at....

It will be real close to the squirrel, but just a little more capacity. Not sure why he went with the HH instead of a Hornet, I do know that he is having trouble necking them down that small.

Sub-caliber can be pretty interesting but they also take a lot of dedication and work. And quite a bit of MONEY! Forming dies (often 4), trim die, aproppriate cleaning rod and brush/jag, multiple annealing, and specaially made bullets. Some are solid gold!!! :-[ :-[ :-[
But they are fun to shoot. Makes you pay really close attention to the wind.

Do you hunt with the smaller calibers or target shoot or both. What is average yardage you can shoot with these little darlings? How big of an animal can you efficiently dispatch with these cartridges. Now I got laughed at with my savage in 5/35 S/mc which is huge incomparison. However all the nay sayers said that by smalley and mic mcphearsons cartridge's didnt work.Well they do and you have peaked my interest in these smaller calibers. My little cartridge loaded with max loads is way over 4000 fps. The odd part is it will shoot in the one's with 40 grain bergers. You guys are shooting half the bullet weight, wow. I would love to have a 19,17,14,10,08 cal bullets for my collection someday. Too cool.I want to hear more about the sub calibers and where to buy bullets and dies etc.

google or yahoo sub-caliber rifle rounds and hide the check register/ credit card statements from your wife.

Blaine Eddy killed a whole mess of coyotes with a 14-221FB about 12yrs ago, if you google 14-221 Blaine Eddy you'll see how well it works. On another interesting not at 100yds a 14cal bullet will completly penetrate a 3" phone book.

The is a guy here at a local gun shop that loads and shoots 14 for coyotes. He has killed some nice ones. Very tedious to reload those tiny pills. I get frustrated loading flat base 20s in 204 ruger! Camfer camfer camfer!

johnbearman, I just finished chambering my 5/35 SMC today a couple of buddies and I are going to give it a go, mine is a 9 twist so im going for 45-50grain pills.

I have 3, 14 caliber guns right now, Im not sure if my buddy is going to talk me into anything smaller. These things are a real blast to shoot, my 14 Walker has no problem taking a Coyote and I have heard rumors that someone shot an Antelope with one this past season, but I don't know for sure because that would be illegal in this state. They do take a lot of time, 1/10 of a grain makes a big difference in speed and accuracy. Even doing my own work, its expensive to play with these little rounds. Then you have to add a custom cleaning rod, jags and brushes, all the reloading equipment is custom. There a couple fellows that make bullets for them, I plan on getting my own bullet dies and making my own as soon as possible. For the most part I shoot ground squirrels and PD's out to 200yds or so. You find out real quick that even a breeze will mess with them out past 100yds.

Like I said im not sure if I want to jump into a 12 or 10 just yet but the butt head has me thinking about it, what are friends for.
