Re-Inventing an Old Wildcat from 250 Savage to Ackley 6.5mm

The Goal? Use a modern Brass to Create an even better Version of the 250 Savage in 6.5mm. Options are 22 Nosler Brass, 6mm Hagar Brass & 6.8 spc Brass. OAL would be in the neighborhood of 2.6". I call this the RPC 6.5mm, and I need to find a way to get one made without breaking the bank. I read where there was a 22-250 6.5mm and 250 Savage 6.5mm Wildcat decades ago. I will be restricted to either a 0.378 in or 0.442 rim size. Think Mini-Creedmoor. I have read where the Nosler 22 Brass and Hagar brass could offer considerably more power than the Grendel, which is limited pressure wise. What would you use to Ream the Barrel? Which is the best forming process for Brass? I need to best combination using existing components to save on costs.

This^^^ And it would impossible to improve on the quality of 6.5x47L brass. That alone is worth it's weight in gold.

So you think I should just trim the Brass down to size? .." I will be restricted to either a 0.378 in or 0.442 rim size. "

Lapua makes .22-250 brass, Neck it up to 6.5, you could design the reamer for an Ackly type shoulder design and spec out the case taper, and neck length.

Another vote for the 6.5x47L. You can be up and shooting a fantastic cartridge considerably quicker and less expensively than starting from scratch.

Another option, the 6.5mm IHMSA is essentially a 6.5mm-250 Savage Improved. While not nearly as popular as the 7mm IHMSA, everything is available for it on a custom order basis.

Although blazing your own trail is fun in it's own right if time and money aren't an issue.

Yea, thanks for the replies, but ya'll are headed off the Road here. 473 Rim is Not an Option listed. Thanks. That means no 47mm or 22-250. The only choices for Brass I see are the 6mm Hagar by Hornady and the 22 Nosler followed by 6.8-SPC.
Can't the bolt be opened on an AR? Matt

He's on a budget , I'd go with the 6.5 TCU or the 30 rem AR necked down to 6.5 . Either will cost about $1000. Reamers , dies , barrel etc

Could simply order a 22x6.8 barrel or a 6x6.8 barrel or a 25x6.8 barrel or a 6.5x68 barrel. Go over to predator master board and do a search on their AR threads for plenty of info. No need to reinvent something on this project.

Lapua is about to release 6.5 Creedmoor brass and I think the forming proces from there would be a simple project.}

If you are building on an AR-15 platform (you don't say so I'm guessing) the Grendel is your best option for 6.5 caliber. If you want to use an AR-10 platform, you can use the 250 case.

Sorry, I'm sure it's on me, but that wasn't clear to me. We seem to all be blinded by your chosen rim size restriction, and possibly for good reason. Why, again, do you covet that so ardently?

If you really want a rebated 6.5-250 then turn the rims of 22-250 cases and neck 'em up, then improve 'em. Or turn the rims of 6.5 Creedmoor, which body is essentially a 250 Ackley 30-deg. Good luck.

Yes, it was an extended OAL AR project. I'm just going to turn down some .416 Barrett, that should work better than 22 Nosler Brass.

I am totally confused by this thread. I think I will put it on my watch list.
Turn down a .416 Barrett?
Try to stuff a cartridge like the 250 AI x 6.5 into a standard AR 15 platform?
I have a friend who's tried the 22 Nosler out and it is wrecking brass even with an adjustable gas block.

I gotta hand it to you, no one's tried any of these ideas.

Honestly I gave up. Nobody would bother reading the Thread purpose. I got some Cheerleaders for the Creedmoor and the 47mm Lapua and that Brass won't work in my application as I stated in the 1st post. The 250 Savage Shoulder is too big for that Die kit to work on the SPC or Hagar or Nosler 22 Brass. I started a Group for 22 Nosler Wildcats on Social Media. Cheers.

Honestly, even if we'd all stayed within your constraints, you'd have had to give up anyway. All you (and we) lost was time.
