250 Savage Brass

I recently aquired a 250 Savage. Not really a fan of Winchester brass and its not always available as I understand it. My question is this - has anyone ever formed 250 Savage brass from higher quality 22-250 brass (Norma/Lapua/Nosler)? If so what steps did you take to get it done as far as necking the brass up, fire forming, etc....? Did you find that the necks get too thin by the end? Was the finished product worth the effort?

Seems a bit messed up to form the parent brass from its wildcat, but what is a man to do.

Thanks in advance for your reply.

I've never bothered, but Lapua, being factory annealed and super consistent would be the choice.

I would think standard Remington or Winchester brass, weight sorted and flash hole chamfered would give you all the accuracy you'd want from a hunting rig even with a custom barrel.

Loading too many different calibers myself, I'm a stickler for correct headstamp.

When I owned a 250 Savage, Lapua brass wasn't available, but I had no trouble at all with Remington and Winchester 22-250 brass. It's pretty simple and straight forward. You just neck it up and run it through a 250 Savage die. I don't know that it will be worth the extra expense for a hunting rifle, but it's probably worth a try. Oh, the necks won't be too thin either.

Brand new 250 Savage brass can be had from several retailers, as has been said, anything short of competition benchrest requirements Rem and Win brass should work great.

Thanks for the responses gentlemen. The rifle will be for both hunting and target shooting. Will stick with a bag of Winchester stuff for now, will try out some Lapua if I run across a deal on new or once fired.

My old single shot Remington Rolling Block shoots Winchester brass just as good as the few Lapua 22-250 cases I made to compare. Tom

I have had good results with Win in 250 Sav, 6x55, and 308 - had terrible luck with factory LOADED 30-06 fireforming in an Ackley chamber - several lateral case cracks 3/8 above the rim - at the same time, shot Rem and Fed factory stuff with no issues. Anyway in the small stuff, not one issue. PM me if you want a few freebie virgin brass to try.
