RCBS Kit questions.

Hi I have a question for you all. I can get a RCBS - Rock Chucker Supreme Master Reloading Kit for 275 total Canadian but am wondering if I would be better off picking up a Forster Coax and Forster trimmer and piecing everything else together. What would you do If you were starting out? Also will the Forster dies work in the RCBS press? I will be reloading for some benchrest and long range .223 .

Thanks

It's hard to beat a Rock Chucker.
That said, I did piece together my bench with many second hand items found on various auctions and sites like this.
There are items in kit's I didn't need and some items I needed that wasn't in a kit,
know what I mean?

Your first purchse should be Books, or go to the library and read everything they have, Research, Study,, then you can make a desision as to what Items YOU will need.

The Rock Chucker is alot heaver and more versatile. The Forster is alittle more accurate, but both are great presses. When you say bench rest and 223 I assume the bench rest will not be competitive at the nation level simply because no shooting at that level is using a 223. If you gun has a factory chamber I would recommend the Rock Chucker. The dies will work in any of the modern presses. You can also pick up a die set to take the crimp out of military cases and the heaver press is better for that purpose.

I just started reloading not long ago. I started out buying the RCBS supreme reloading kit. The press is heavy duty. The only extra things you will need to get is....

.RCBS powder flow stand $20
.Case trimmers $50-$100
.calipers $20-$150
.primer pocket and case uniforming and cleaning hand tools (I got a 6 hand tools kit for $50)
.case cleaning tumbler and media $40-$100
.dies $30-$200
.reloading manuals (more the better) $20-$30 a pop
.reloading materials (powder, cases, primers and bullets) $150 give or take?

You should also make a area in your house (basement or spare bedroom) to built a small heavy duty bench to mount your press on. Buy or build a small storage shelf to put your materials and hand tools in.

I acquired all my items thoughout 1 year of time. I first bought the RCBS kit. Then I did lots of research on this forum and I bought 1 or 2 things a month. After I got everything I needed then I built a heavy duty bench, shelves and bought some 2 foot long under cabinet lights and made a reloading room in my basement. It takes time and money! Be patient and read lots of books and ask lots of questions on this forum and before you know it you will be reloading.

Yes the RockChucker Kit is very good and have seen on another web site a modification for the RCBS press using two kita from Hornady(#044093 and #044099 so you can set up each die you are using too just click in and out and not lose your setup.)

It would only a local club level as far as either is concerned. The long range would be a little more serious but not much. I think I will go with the kit and am interested in the hornaday conversion kit.

Thanks

I have the Hornady conversion on my Rockchucker and I like it a lot. I mostly load at the range with my Harrell's Combo press, but occasionally I help a friend work up loads for a caliber that is too large to fit that press, and they usually have threaded seating dies, as well as the sizers. When loading small groups of test loads, it is easy to loose dies' setting, switching back and forth from sizing to seating. With the Lock-N-Load conversion, this problem is eliminated.
