Rangefinder Question?

A friend of mine is asking whether or not rangefinders are allowed at competitions where the targets are placed at unknown distances. I don't know much about competition shooting and rules, but told him I would ask the pros! Thanks in advance for your help.

Anyone?

It varies. I don't shoot very many of these any more, maybe one or two every couple years. Typically the ones I've been to, you travel as a squad, of 3-5 two-person teams. When you arrive at a stage, the RO will brief you, and explain the rules of engagement for that particular stage. Some times they will point out the targets, some times they will point them out and give you the ranges. Some times they expect you to range them using a scope reticle. Some times they won't give you the ranges, but will allow you to range them with whatever you want - but on the clock, as you only have a limited amount of time to find, range, and engage the targets (for both shooters).

Thanks, I'll pass this info on

I've been to a couple where shooters were allowed to walk the course beforehand with a rangefinder and make notes, but rangefinders were not allowed once the shooting began.
