Took one of my old Mod37 Remingtons to sight in this morning. Took the 8X Lyman Target Spot off and put a 12X Unertl on it. Never saw such a piece of crap. Believe it or not it has 1moa wide cross hairs. I tried bracketing the 10 ring. This is going to be a problem tomorrow as the other guys in the club have 36X-45X scopes. I have a couple extra BR scopes, but I will not destroy the value of the Mod37 by drilling and tapping the receiver. I used Lapua Multi match, 20yr old Tenex, and Eley Benchrest Gold. It appears that the Lapua and BR Gold shot best in it. It shoots consistent .375 groups, but I think the wind needs to blow to give me a little help tomorrow..

You do not need to drill and tap the action. There are a lot of Dove Tail mounts on the market. I would suggest a medium or high rise set of mounts with the single screw. Make sure you get the right size as some are 11 meters and others are smaller. Harrells sells a set that can be mounted on both sizes.

Harrells sells a good mount. but there are also good and cheaper mounts on the market. These are what I use on my Anschutz mod 54, which is single shot and needs the high set for ease of loading. The Weaver 36X is a good scope and works great at 50 or 100 yards, but if shooting at 25 yards, it wont focus. You will need an older regular Weaver 36.

I just started shooting rimfire in July of last year. I find it really fun to shoot and the only drawback is inconsistent ammunition and wind. I have great luck with Tenex and Wolf Target match and Wolf Target Extra. They both shoot great. The difference is that the Target Match extra shoots about an inch higher but still maintains the same size groups.

Have fun.

Nick, Where will you attach the bases? I have all type bases and rings, but I don't know of any bases can be attached to the Mod37 without drilling and tapping.

I am not familiar with your rifle, but you rear peep sight is usually attached with a dovetail mount and there should be a dovetail mount on either side of the ejection port.

Butch,
I would never bet against you if you were using open sights!!
Having fun with a piece of history in your hands is what it's all about anyway.
All the best my friend,

Nick, it has a Unertl dovetail on the LH side of the rear receiver ring at about 45 deg. Nothing else other than the drilled and tapped holes in the barrel.

Joe, this was Mike Walker's personal 22RF and was his favorite. It is kinda unique.

I checked the net for photos of your rifle. It appears that it does not have Dove Tail mounts. that's an odd one to me. I have never ran across a rimfire without them. you learn something new ever day.

The rear mount for the Unertl is a dove tale. The 22LR has no recoil. I have seen several shooters using a single mount attached to the Unertl mount only. There is no reason why you need to attach it with two mounts. It will be very stable with one mount. Go to Rimfirecentral and ask. they will be able to advise you as rimfire is their mainstay.

Butch, this is what you need. Screws right into the holes in the barrel.

Winchester 52 / Rem Mod 37 rail
I'm aware of that base, but I'm in a position with a match tomorrow of being sh$t out of luck. I was going to shoot one of my 40X RF, but that is another story. My fault as I never shoot rimfire and they all had cobwebs. I will shoot the match with what I have and will be prepared for the next match.
Thanks guys, I always know that I can get good help here.

Nick, I'll order the base that Pig Button suggested.

As pigbottom said, it will work for your model 37.

You can also order it from Amazon, but it will take at least a week before they ship it out. You remove the rear mount for the Unertl and simply screw this one in. There is a video on installation on the site Piogmottom sent you. I am pulling for you my friend. Please let is know how you make out.

Butch,. If it is of any consequence, I have the EGW mount (rail) on my 37. On it for about 6 years now with no issues. I have had a heavy (Mueller 8-32x44TD) scope on it and it now wears a Sightron S II 36x scope. Rail has never moved or flexed which was an initial concern. A drop of blue Loctite on the screws and good to go. My rifle came with all of the original sights. Unfortunately, my 71 year old eyes refuse to play with them. Good luck with your match. Your skill will see you through!

My other Mod37s have factory irons. If you have the old Precision Shooting Magazine that has an article on Mike Walker's personal favorite rifles. My Mod37 is one and I also have Mike's Mod 722 in 257 Roberts. The reason Mike's doesn't have iron sights on it as stated in the article, Mike cut the breech off about 3" and rechambered with a match reamer with a tight throat. With the shortened barrel you couldn't get the proper adjustment with the irons in back and the front being 3" back.
Great news on the base as I ordered online yesterday.

How was the match yesterday. I hope you had fun and shot well. How did thos old bullets work out for you.

Nick

Nick, we had 18 shooters. I was lucky to place 8th. Would have been 6th, but I was beat on the Xs. After looking through the scope, the guys were surprised at my score. I had to bracket the whole target ring as I couldn't hold on the 10 ring. The target was 2.250" in diameter. I put the vertical cross hair on the outside diameter on the RH side and horizontal cross hair at the bottom of the 2.250 diameter. We had 10-20 MPH winds and I couldn't see the rings well enough to hold off properly for those conditions.
I will have my 36X next match.
I did have a great time.

That's some pretty good shooting under any circumstances. I would hate to shoot against you with your present setup but properly mounted with the Weaver, will put you in a class all to yourself. Glad to hear your old ammo still shoots good. I hope you have enough of that Tenex left to shoot a few more matches. At this time it is $30.00 a box.

Butch I know exactly what you are looking at on that crosshair. I've got a 12x here that did have them but Unertl was still in business so I sent it in to have a fine crosshair installed. The only reason I keep it is because its all one old rifle will accept.
