Range Invaders

This groundhog made poor choices.

Also, when I was returning from an unsuccessful out of state deer hunt several years ago, I pulled into my drive to see an 8-point buck staring calmly at me while standing right in front of my backstop. Season in our state didn't start for two more days. I just shook my head and went into the house.

Rayners Range last Summer. Had to stop the match for a bit while the little Buck checked us and our equipment out.

Had a big Bobcat meander across my 22 range during a match twice this summer. Didn't have a care in the World.

Sparty Sportsman’s Club in Spartansburg ,PA. 500 yard max distance.
the local Amish kids just walk across whenever they want to. I’ve had them stroll between the 400 and 500 berm as well as between the firing line and the 100 yard berm. Truly some ignorant kids.

When we shot at Ft. Wolters in Mineral Wells, Texas. I remember sometimes we would have to chase white tail deer off the range, a dozen or more at times. There was a low spot just before the target pits and the grass was always green and thick. Damn I miss that range!

I was at Fort Dix one year waiting our turn on the big range to run validation tests for some small arms. While a 25mm Bushmaster was firing an ammo validation test, the cease fire siren blew and all firing stopped. A deer had wandered onto the range. No one could go out there because of UXO issues and the deer was taking his time looking around. He left after about forty-five minutes and firing resumed. They told me that this happens occasionally during the year, except in deer season when the range personnel are out hunting in the woods around Dix. None to be seen, then.

I was firing a 1000 yard match at Camp Pendleton Range 117 when cease fire sounded because one of the Pendleton bison herd wandered onto the range. Several guys went out there and yelled at him from a safe distance, but he was notably unimpressed and took about an hour to decide to leave.

An article from way back.
Similar experiences on many Bases where I have shot competitive matches.
Not sure if this is legible when clicked on, but I saved this bit from a magazine decades ago.
I can attest to Deer grazing on the Yano Tank Range at Ft. Knox, the Brown Pistol Range, Scott Mountain, and Kennedy KD Rifle Ranges while live fire was underway. Typically cease fire was called and a Jeep or Range truck (if practical) was dispatched to scoot them away if they were near the impact area. All Range Safety Masters made it abundantly clear that if any Wildlife was actively targeted, that Gunner would be in front of his Company Commander and the Provost Marshal in short order.
I can say that while plowing, disking, planting and mowing, I saw many Deer, Coyotes, Turkeys and assorted Wildlife; they paid me little to no attention. Even walking about near the barn did not seem to alarm them.
