Setting up a 1,000 yard range

Learn to use cross sticks. I shoot 800-1000 yds with a Sharps, sitting, off of cross sticks and they work quite well. If using a scope you will not get an eyebrow trim line.

I normally do have shooting sticks. I was hunting out of a elevated box blind and left 5 minutes early to check out a field. There were hogs at 350 but I was on a road in the open so all I had to rest on was my binoculars prone.

Another thought- is your stock’s length of pull too short for prone?

So, I decided to set up a temporary range at the original place. I plan on driving 10’ drill pipe and hang a 4x8’ sheet of plywood for a target holder. I decided to use 10’ T-Posts temporarily just to confirm the location.
We set the posts, attached the plywood and put of an official 1,000 yd bench rest target. We have a steel bench ordered like the one we have at our 670 yd range.
I set up at 1,000 yds shooting from the high rack on top of one of our hunting Jeeps resting on a jacket (not ideal but it’s a hunting ranch). The wind was 10:30-1:30. I dialed my 3-16x56 Leupold CDS to 1,000 yrd mark. I am shooting a 7PRCW. I did not hold for wind just centered for a cold bore shot. I hit just right in the 7 ring. My first of many future attempts at 1,000 yds.

After setting up this temporary range we have now decided to take down the cedars 50’ to the left and put in a big pile of calichie (dirt) behind the target to protect the high fence. We will also build a shelter to keep the sun off of us. If there is interest we could set up a nice range with several shooting stations we have the room.

Direction is optional. So you want 90° wind or sun ? We chose the sun. Range targets are to the east so we use sun blockers just above the bench. Works great starting at certain times. Tail winds with west winds are the outcome

I have used Shotmarker at our 1000 yd range for about 6 years.

It works great but you MUST be around 1250 FPS at the target so the microphones will pick up the sonic boom when the projectile goes through the pick up area.

Larger calibers may not be heard by the micro phones because they are not going fast enough.

For those slower projectiles we put clay pigeons in the empty targets and have someone spot the splash in the berm.
