Rabbit Hunting In West Texas

After seeing some of y'all's threads about hunts I thought I should post about mine from a couple of weeks ago.

Took a couple of friends to a farm north of Kermit, just a couple of miles south of NM, to try and thin the jackrabbits that are eating cotton plants. It was way too windy at times so the hunting could have been better but we did have some luck at night with a spotlight and one mornin when the conditions were right.

We are all Savage guys so that brand was well represented. I have a Stealth in 6.5 Creedmoor, a 12 LRVP in 6BR, and a 17HMR. I also brought my AR in 6X45. For the Stealth I worked up a load with 95gn VMAX. I couldn't run them too fast as they came apart sometimes but I was able to find an acceptable load. My 6BR and 6X45 both used a 87gn VMAX.

He is a bad picture of how we hunted one night. My 17HMR and Win model 12 on the right. My buddy's 22 and Benelli on the left. The 17 isn't as dramatic as the larger calibers but it dropped some big jackrabbits like an anvil fell on them.

I used my Caldwell Stable Table for the first time. I may mod it a little but it worked just fine as is.

223 with 55gn Dogtown bullets. Those things were brutal!

This one was a dogtown too. The rabbit flew apart with the front half landing 2 yards away and the back half landing 8 yard farther.

My sis had an infestation of Jack rabbits last winter.. I killed like 60 in one day with a 22 Mag.. Some years there's lots here, some not. This year is not..

30 years ago I used to cull them with a bow over near Goldsmith, 25-35 miles East from Kermit? In the hot part of the day they will try to hide in a bush because it’s so hot they don’t want to run. After you spot them don’t stare at them while you just keep walking closer, and they will let you get within 20-30 ft. I don’t have any pictures. I didn’t even have a dumb phone yet. They are good practice for bow hunting deer, since the entire jackrabbit is about the size of the boiler room on a whitetail.
