I have a very large pecan tree that has fallen over. Is pecan suitable for atock making? I know it is pretty hard, and damned stringy to split. Figure someone here may have some experience with it.

That it is!Good for an offset smoker from reports… ribs and brisket for days!
Mike Pecan can be used as a gunstock. Almost 10 years ago I asked that same question to my stockmaker Terry Leonard from TN who passed away in November of 2019. I own at least 10 BR rifles that wear his stocks. I called him in 2013 and told him that Dwight Scott was building me my first ground up SR 30BR score rifle and I wanted a wood/carbon fiber stock and I had access to 2 blanks, a piece of Pecan or Pistachio. Well in the end it was my choice because he said he could do either one and he ended up making a stock out of pistachio. When I sent him the blank, he called me up and said, "I hope you didn't pay a lot for this blank"? I said why? He said it's pretty plain looking. So I said to him well if it doesn't turn out good I can use it for a chock block. He laughed. That was the running joke when we talked to each other. I would say how's my chock block coming? Again he would always chuckle . Well after it was all done, he said u know something this stock turned out better looking than I thought. He said in the light it changes color from a yellow to a greenish/ yellow. It's just has a straight grain to it but it's beautiful. He was the best IMO of making wood/carbon stocks. The finish on his stocks were always flawless.I have a very large pecan tree that has fallen over. Is pecan suitable for atock making? I know it is pretty hard, and damned stringy to split. Or my smoker, just to clarify...No reason why not. It is used in woodworking and is a good looking wood when finished. Unless you are stocking a big magnum or express rifle, it should work okay.
Keep your tools sharp and save the scraps for the smoker
Scraps hell......this thing is 40+ inches at the base and the log is about 25 feet.No reason why not. It is used in woodworking and is a good looking wood when finished. Unless you are stocking a big magnum or express rifle, it should work okay.

Cut the smaller limbs for the firewood. Get that log to the mill!!!Scraps hell......this thing is 40+ inches at the base and the log is about 25 feet.
I heat with wood, and I like smoked meats. Don't play baseball.....The wood makes great baseball bats. If your wood doesn't work out for a stock, you can always make some baseball bats.![]()
This is a rifle I made with a pecan stock, accents are mesquite cut from the property I hunt in Texas. There is also pecan trees there but this blank didn’t come from there.
Remington 700 single shot in 250 Savage. SS action was used because we are in and out of vehicles and unloading all the time. Easier to just drop cartridge in shirt pocke and it doesn’t get scratched up.

Original idea was where I hunt there are no walnut trees.
Having a rifle with the wood of the area just seems better.
And then we found buried in the stock blanks this baby, Osage Orange. On same property there is an Osage tree I sit under to have a break. Heavy, hard. Buttstock alone is nearly a pound heavier than walnut.
For a Encore.
