wood for a stock

I have a question for anyone with knowledge of wood working, stock building, etc. I have a piece of a barn beam that was built in 1856. It has been in the family the entire time and to the best of my knowledge never been out doors. The wood is wormy chestnut. Is it suitable for a rifle stock?
Thanks for any information,
Lloyd

It should work depending on grain and if fairly free of cracks. Worm holes can be filled.
I like the concept of using wood with a history to the shooter or to the place where hunting.
I have a Thompson Contender pistol grip and fore end made from a mesquite tree that grew outside my bedroom window when I was a kid.
When I go to hunt a a friend's place in Texas there are no walnut trees, I am in process of making a stock of woods that are found on the property. White Oak with Osage Orange tip. Not your "normal" woods but the karma is much better. Butt and fore end to be hollowed for weight.
Chestnut is not a typical wood but it will work fine, you may not be best (depending on grain flow) for a high recoil rifle but if you do use it it will be a great family heirloom.

Send a pm to Gundoktr on this site. Jim Kobe, best wood guy around. I suspect that whoever does the work will have to handle the wood to give you an honest evaluation. Jim's # 952-884-6031
