Question about new 6mm BR

My son-in-law would like me to put together a 6mm br for him. He does not reload so he will be using Lapua Factory ammo. He does not reload so I can buy his once fired brass to help defray the cost of the ammo. What's the typical price for once fired 6mm br brass?

How much do you expect he will shoot? I would think a 6BR would be cost prohibitive if you have to buy ammo and shoot quite a bit. Maybe a 6 Creedmoor would be a better choice for the non-reloader?

If he is set on 6BR, maybe work out a barter system. You load him ammo for him and he does something you hate to do

I built my Son a 6BR (out of state) and did the load development for him.
Gave him 350 rounds of my handloads. (about a year or so for him.) Once a year
I check the throat on it and make the necessary adjustments. (It don't move much)
I just use same lot# powder and bullets and load em up for him. 6BR is perfect
for that reason, it's perfect.

You're gonna' build a rifle for this guy and he's not willing to GIVE you his used brass? Give me a break.

If he insists on selling his used brass to you at retail prices, quote him an assembly fee of $1000 to put his rifle together if he pays for the components.

This is an all around bad deal just for the simple fact he doesnt reload. Its obsurred to buy factory ammo.

Same as having a 338 lapua and buying factory ammo at $120 a box of 20... its not something you have if you dont reload...

Now, if you reload for him its another story... just my .02

Your just assuming hes paying for it all.. dont assume. Assumptions are wrong many times. Just my .02

Is the rifle you're putting together for him going to be a hunting rifle or a competition rifle?
In either event, on the surface it appears to be a great opportunity for you and him to get in some bonding time while you're teaching him to reload.

One of the greatest joys of being a shooter is a small, tight group that you reloaded the ammo for by yourself. JMHO :);) WD

BarrelNut: First of all my son-in-law has not insisted on anything. We have not even talked price. I want to pay him for the brass. It would be a good source of cheap brass for me and help him defray some of the cost of the ammo.

The labor to build the rifle is his Christmas gift from me.

Him reloading is not on the horizon. No interest and too busy. He makes an obscene amount of money per month. Having said that you know how cheap rich people are, LOL!

The cost of 6mmBR Lapua ammo with Scenar bullets significantly cheaper than 6.5 Creedmore bullets, around $1.80 each for 90 and 105gr Scenar loads (Lapua Factory) vs. $2.30 for Creedmore. If I pay him .40 for the brass he will have a net cost of only $1.40 a round. Chump change at 200 rounds per year. Even if he really gets into it he won't shoot more than prob 500 to 1000 a year, again chump change.

The reason I suggested 6mmBR is it's inherent accuracy (important for him) and the low recoil is attractive too. He will prob only shoot 100 or 200 rounds a year. He has 200 acres and we have room to shoot 500 yards there. If the accuracy of the factory ammo is not good enough I will do some limited reloading for him.

Another reason I chose the 6BR is he may want to bring it along for those long range squirrels and/or windy day shots.

So back to my original reason I posted. Is .40 cents fair?

Ratbuster,

I took most of the comments as tongue and cheek. $.40 is reasonable if your use the same reamer and set up the headspace as close to identical as you can.

I do question your numbers for loaded Lapua vs loaded 6CM, but it really makes no difference as you have a use for the BR brass.

I'm sure he'll be tickled shitless with a 6BR. Everyone I know own who has one loves it.

Chris:

My bad on the 6mmBR vs. Creedmoor pricing. I was thinking of 6.5x47 Lapua which is around $2.30 per round. The cheapest Lapua brand BR ammo with Scenar bullets I found is $1.60 per round. Creedmoor is only 90 cents each so there is a cost advantage to the Creedmoor. But the Creedmore is Hunting ammo by Hornady. I doubt the Creedmoor Hornady hunting ammo would compare well to Lapua Scenar ammo.

Chris,

I do want the reamer to match the dimensions of the factory ammo as best as possible. Since my 6mm rifle will be a 20 or 22 cal I suppose I will have my reamer made to match his in all dimensions except neck diameter.

Ideally I could borrow or rent a reamer that mates well with the Lapua factory ammo to give him the best chance of good accuracy with the factory fodder. Can anyone recommend how to go about finding a reamer suited to that? I tried to find Lapua contact information on their website but came up empty. I suppose we could get a box of ammo and make the measurements ourselves. Or maybe the reamer mfg.'s would have that data?
