Question about FT/R stocks

Do you want the toe of the stock to be parallel with the bottow of the forend or do you want a little bit of and angle up towards the grip to allow for elevation changes with the rear bag? The reason I ask is that My FT/R rifles stock has a pretty steep angle from toe to grip and I am going to make a bag rider for it. I just dont know if the bag rider should be parallel to the forend or if it should have a slight angle. Thanks for any help!

Even on an FT/R rifle where elevation comes from the rear bag and not the front rest? Not questioning your input just want to be clear.

The flatter the stock, The less you have to play with getting back on target. An angled stock is going to go back and down.

That was my thought as well, as far as stock design goes. What about elevation adjustment then? My bipod doesnt have a quick elevation adjustment. Are most FT/R shooter squeezing the rear bag?

I've never had an issue having a fresh round chambered and back on my POA before the target is back up. That's shooting a tapered stock and with a good target puller. Then again YMMV...

Here is my solution

@AJ300mag, my concern is less with getting back on target and more with having a good follow through after the shot breaks, and being able to STAY on target.

@mysticplayer, That is a HOT looking stock! I constructed a bag rider last night for my stock. Turned out pretty nice... Not as nice as yours, with its elevation adjustment and all. Did you vinyl wrap your action?

Isn't that illegal?

I prefer a very slight angle when using a height adjustable front skipod style bipod. Most of the adjustment is made up front, with very minor tweaking w/ the rear bag. My favourite butt configuration is the McMillan MBR- just enough angle to track back and down a bit.

Shooting position and hold contrbutes to that...

I've seen the spotter disc go flying off of the target when the bullet connected with the spindle.

I don't disagree at all. But, rifle tracking plays a role as well. I think I've got a pretty good position and technique.

I would suggest some taper. I shot one of my F-Open rifles with a Centershot Bipod and the fine elevation adjustment was a PIT* because the underside of the fore-end and the bag rider are milled parallel. My McMillan A-5 has a taper in the back and it is much easier to work with and get a consistent hold.

I like a taper to get the major elevation location. The squeeze for the fine tuning.
With a joy stick - go straight.
Jerry - I am pretty sure by the F/TR rules - your adjustable stock is not allowed. It is in F-open.

I built my bag rider to have a slight taper to it. Not much, maybe 3/16 over its 6" length. If need be I can taper it down more later. I will post pictures of it as soon as I get it stained.

I thought I remembered reading that mechanically adjustable bag riders or rear bags were illegal for FT/R. Did want to bring it up and start the legal debate.

the rule states that no adjustable support is allowed. the stock is not "support" it is what is being supported.
NRA rule
No portion of the rifle
=
s butt or forend shall rest directly on the ground
or any hard surface. A rear
rabbit eared bag, small sandbag or a gloved hand ma
y be used to support the rifle
=
s butt. Any rear
support employed shall not be attached, clamped or
held to the rifle in any manner. The rear support
may not be fixed to or protrude into the firing poi
nt. Mechanically adjustable rear support is not allowed.
