Question about comp. stock butt

I am building a stock that might be used for competition in the future. I live in kind of a "vacuum" up here, don't know of anyone with a comp. stock that I can look at. In fact, I have never seen one other than in pictures on the web. I have the forend 3 inches wide for the front bag already. That part was easy.

My question is: how should I form the area for the rear bag (from the toe to the grip)? Should it be flat on the bottom or rounded? If it is flat, how wide should the flat be? Approximately what is the width of the stock 1 inch above the bottom plane?

The bottom plane of the butt is cut to parallel the forend. It will track straight back. I just don't know what the "cross sectional" view should look like.

Thanks for any help.

What type of competition? Short range registered (NBRSA or IBS) have very specific rules regarding the angle of the butt stock in relation to the forend.

In the area there are some informal benchrest matches and F class.

At this time it would be used mostly for informal benchrest.

I have the stock roughed out already. There is no difference in the angle of the forend to the angle of the bottom of the butt stock.

I can't change that now. It seemed to me the vast majority of the stocks I see that are advertised for competition are designed this way. I just assumed the design would fit into more than one discipline.

I guess I have to do more research.

Thanks.

Jim
