Question about coyote hunting?

My approach is simple...Be Quiet and don't skyline yourself as your headed for a stand. If you can do it without too much movement and the coyote is kind of hanging...Purse your lips and make soft sucking noise on the flesh between your thumb and fore finger. Flexing your thumb back and forth creates soft, squeaky noises. It works!!

My Foxpro really changed my fortune with calling. I used to spend my winter months trapping because I was never successful calling with mouth calls. I would trap until I cleaned out the coyotes, wait two weeks, set another trap line. I still trap, but I have mixed in the calling. Trapping is more work. I use distressed rabbit calls in the fall through December and then switch to mating calls in the January to February time frame and lastly, I use fawn in distress calls in the spring. The entire reason I was doing all this was to protect my herd's fawns which has worked wonders. I kill more than a dozen a year on an 80 acre parcel.

We hunt central and west Texas and enter 4 to 6 contests every season. What we have figured out is if they don't come in on the fox pro we immediately go to mouth calls. The reason being- everybody has a digital caller nowadays and you can achieve different tones and pitches with the reed calls. We don't really camo up and will only spend 20 minutes or so on a set. If a coyote barks at you and you can't locate it pack up and move- you've been made. Our success rates in the contests are pretty darn good but we spend a lot of time gaining access to various ranches so as not to waste time on a place that's been hunted out.
