I didn't see you mention scent control. Pay attention to the wind and do what you can to avoid having a dog circle downwind. I've never shot a dog, but have killed a handful of red fox over the years with digital and mouth calls. Pretty neat experience. if you are in eastern OH, I'll guess that the terrain in similar to northwestern PA.

think I'm going to try to go out 2 hours before day light on Friday morning.

The best thing you can do for scent control is keep the coyotes upwind, anything else is hit and miss.

I love using a mildot, not for ranging as I such at it past 600 yards, but for holdover. It's nice once you have verified the ranges that you can shoot long without having to touch the scope.

Great field pics. Toby, one thing I always try to do is be able to see at least 100 yds. downwind of my call if possible. Also helps if you have a dog that is a crack shot. LOL.

my god that's a nice one. I'm so jealous. I've not verified all my distances with my mil dot yet. I have a load that works perfect on my ballistic software though. switched the scope. probably go out here in a little while. it's 3am right now. just got off work. another question. hunting at night I'm always afraid I'll shoot someone's dog. It's hard to verify at night with a red lens light. called in one last year that was a hoss. coulda been a shepard though. . he came back in 2 weeks later but not nearly as close the second time. I'm going to hunt from 5 to 8 then head home for some sleep before 11 hour shift.

Toby, at night you should be able to get them into a distance that makes them distinguishable. I've had them 5 to 30 yards.

If you have trouble with the red light you might try green. It's easier on human eyes.

got one. wont hunt at night again unless I've got someone with me. she was 350 when I ranged her and I dialed. then she came closer. I just dialed back to zero. I got it sighted for 2.8 inches high at 100. put it on 10 power and aimed a little high. I'm definitely going to work on this mil dot. I knew the 1st dot was 360 so I aimed a little high but not a whole dot. what blew my mind was how hard it was to see even when it was standing broad side in a field with grass a little more than knee deep. shot went through right behind shoulder and came out right behind rib on other side. ran bout 15 yards or so. bullet passed. no damage. I'm so psyched. been awake nearly 24 hours and can't sleep. ;D

Awesome! Good for you!!! Im in southern IL and been deer and about everything else hunting my whole life, but never coyote. Ive seen around 12-13 or so coyote while hunting throughout the years. All the farmers at one of my hunting grounds say they hear and see them all the time. I was also told by a IL conservation officer that that county has a good population. I have seen 3 on 2 different occasions the last 2 years. Im VERY VERY VERY curious what will happen when I go out there with my call and decoy!!! I bought a 1/9 twist .223 with a nice high powered scope this spring. I been shooting it alot and now I know exactly how many clicks to make on my scope from 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 yards. I wouldnt go past 300 with a coyote. Do you guys think I could go past 300 with a .223 or would that be bad? When shooting 2 pound steel plates hanging from chains at 500 yards it really puts a deep hole in them and the plate flings up in the air hard! Im shooting 60g Vmax's. I think it would kill a coyote, but I could be wrong? Hopefully I make my first kill this fall or winter. I have read they mate in february in the midwest and thats the best time to hunt. Is that true? What rifle and scope are you using model12tobey? Obviously a model 12 savage, but what caliber? I have a wireless call that I will be using too. I do plan on learning how to use manual calls. The only thing I need now is a good set on binoculars. I love this website! All you experienced guys keep on posting all your knowledge and advise. It's actually a model 10 with a 6.5x47 pac nor I screwed on it the beginning of the spring. 1 in 8 twist. 123 grain a-maxes at modest speeds. bullet passed all the way through and impacted ground. very little damage. most of ground hog I shot this summer it did very little damage also.

shot many ground hogs with AR and some nuisance coons also. used sierra 69 matchkings. this load did no damage and they was DOA.

to be honest I had a 6-24 power scope I'd been using for ground hog hunting and switched it out for a 2.5-16 on wed night and sighted it in on thur. it has a mil dot reticle which speeds up your shooting to out so far. I have a good idea what each dot is. from what I gathered there' isn't as much time as say it your ground hog hunting or most other hunting. they don't seem like they like to stop and if they do it probably won't last long

I think you probably have much more time to dial shots way out.
shot 960 yards for first time a few weeks ago. 4 of 6 shots woulda hit a coyote.
I'd shoot a coyote at what ever range with 223. be nice though to hit it in a good spot. I'm sure a gut shot wouldn't be too good.

year before last I went out quite a few times. seen coyotes at same spot 3 out of 4 times but they never wanted to come out of the cover for more than a moment. shot at one with 221 fireball and hit tiny limb in front of me with 40 grain v-max. made a nice shot. coyote was gone. I'm going to get open sights or something similar for my AR for close contact. All the coyote hunting I'll get to do for a while is 2 hours every friday morning. such a busy schedule. by the way. used female howl for round 20 minutes to half an hour then switched to beta male howl. course I didn't just leave it run straight. ;D

You should have no problem killing them @ 400 with a 223 with proper shot placement. I use either 55 Vmax or 69 SMK. Whatever shoots best in your gun is likely to get the job done.
