Q re Cleaning -- First 5" from Chamber

I use Boretech and really like it. I found after I get it as good as I can with Boretech if I run a few patches with SeaFoam afterwards I get quite a bit of black carbon out. And if I use a brass brush I get quite a bit more. I tried Boretech C4 and it doesn’t work nearly as well as SeaFoam.

SeaFoam- I will have to give it a try after a Good Cleaning. Bore scoping before and after.
I can still appreciate a really clean bore.

I've found seafoam to be hard to slide through the barrel. It squeaks !
I add a drop of kroil to each side of the patch.
I like it fine. Soak on the ride home & sometimes for a day. I Push that out when i begin to really clean it.
I'll soak the chamber end with a really wet patch, (the rod is sticking out) while i do brass work.

Hoe do you "rinse" the bore mop???

I don't mop, but on the occasions when I use a bronze brush (generally with C4 - I try not to expose the brush to Cu2+), I rinse it by running tap water over it for a minute or so. It seems to extend the life of the brush by at least 2x. I dry it by whacking it against a dry handheld paper towel to get most of the water out; what's left doesn't seem to affect anything (no corrosion or anything.)

I use brake cleaner on brushes, I’ve used it on mops occasionally.

That's a pretty good idea. Whatever works, right.

I see Free All penetrant mentioned on here quite a bit now. It works but boy that stuff seems to gum things up bad. It might be the culprit on some of the ones I've seen, as it came into wide use around the same time and the end results are similar.. I made the mistake of putting some on a Mit micrometer a good while back and I still don't have it all out of there. It sticks! I might end up sending it in for a tune-up.

I have not had it happen but I believe you. Kroil will do the same thing. When it "turns" its like polymerized vegtable oil and it's darn near impossible to clean off.

Creeping stuff will get in places i don't want it.

I haven't figured out the commonality with guns belonging to different people but I suspect there is one because, as I said earlier, I've seen more gummed up triggers in the last 2-3 years than probably all other years combined in this business/game. There almost has to be a common denominator. I'm just not sure where it is, having not had the same problem on my own guns. It's harder to see the commonalities on other peoples' guns than on my own. Who knows....I may be all wet but there seems to be a correlation, somewhere with it. I agree with your description, though.

Bore Tech is water soluble.

Pulled the barrel today, for some cleaning , bore tech and a nylon brush didn’t get it clean, Iosso paste got a bit more but the bore tech and bronze brush got er done with just a few passes.

I believe the gummed up triggers are coming from excess solvent running down bore guides when the gun is tilted down during cleaning. Put a rag under the bore guide and you will see it.

Oh, I agree, but something else has changed, be it the solvents or how they are being used. I mean, we've used bore guides for ages along with cleaners that apparently either didn't get into the triggers or aren't as prone to cause issues. It could be the users as well, but it's multiples of those too. Lol!

My biggest concern with that is the possibility of cleaning fluid working it's way into the trigger, which I've seen more of in the last couple of years than all other years combined, it seems.

I use a bore guide to apply Wipe Out through the action....cork the guide end and the muzzle, and let it sit horizontal in a vice with a slight downward slope to the muzzle. There's little threat of fluid making it through the guide o-ring into the trigger with this set up.

Agreed solvents won't work uphill. The problem comes from excess solvent overflowing the solvent port or from patch insertion running down.

I don't even use the solvent port, fwiw. I just put a couple or so drops on the patch while on the jag. Never cared much for the solvent ports...but that's just me. I agree though, it may very well be people dousing the patch carelessly and fluid ending up in all sorts of places it shouldn't be.

It seems most solvent products instructions say to "saturate" the patch. More is always better....LOL.

I used Iosso on a patch wrapped around a worn bronze brush to remove all of the black in the first 4" of my Savage 6br barrel a couple of times. After the Iosso treatment I used 3 Eliminator soaked patches followed by Hoppes/bronze brush between groups, one fouler & five shots. 6 or 8 groups later the first few inches looked just as bad as before. I'm wondering how important it is to have the first few inches squeaky clean?
