PTG reamer help??

I was reading up on a lot of threads here and a couple other sites on the free bore or throat when it comes to reamers. I ask this because I am going to have my smith build a 6.5x55 for me and I'm pretty sure his reamer is the regular one that makes the chamber accept the longer 160's.

I used the search engine but didn't get all my questions answered so here are a few ???.

I was looking on the PTG site at the 6.5x55 reamers and it showed the custom cut reamers with all of the specs and I was curious if there is a way to figure out some of the dimensions they ask for?
I know that I will be shooting home loads with the 142's and smaller. Do I have to load up a dummy round to see what the OAL is to the ogive before I can get the dimensions they ask for or is there a measurement that they have that I can just order.
Will the brass I'm using have a bearing on any of those dimensions they ask for before they make your custom reamer?

Those are a few questions for now. I'm sure my smith can answer a lot of questions but he is real busy and I'm still a couple months out from getting all of my parts before this build starts and I just wanted to do a little homework and pass on any info that might help him.

Thanks in advance for any input or advice..Hank

Hank,

You've probably read on this forum "just call Dave Kiff and he'll work out with you what you need". I'm here to tell you that is true.

I called PT&G in mid-October to order a reamer, but didn't know EXACTLY what freebore I needed to order. I didn't ask for Dave, but was connected to him and a couple minutes later I had all of my chamber questions answers. Just like that.

I was impressed by that. But what really matters is that when my reamer arrived, it measured exactly as it should. And yes, it cut a very nice chamber.

Hank......I am nobody in this activity. Just someone who dialed PT&G and had questions with the intent of ordering. Really.....just give them a call.

Jerry

Thanks Jerry.. I guess thats what I'm gonna do..I think I will chat with my gunsmith on Tuesday and ask him a few questions as well. He has only chambered a couple of the 6.5x55's but he might have "All" the answers to my questions.. :o

Hank:

One option you may consider is buying a reamer with only .020-.040" of throat and buy a throating reamer. Then you can have your gunsmith cut your chambers for any throat you might desire. It adds about $65.00 to the original cost but it makes your chamber reamer more versatile. The 6.5 Throating reamer can be used with any other short throated 6.5 chamber reamer as well.

Many gunsmiths already have throating reamers and could take a dummy round and cut the throat to fit the presented round.

Hank: Just build a "dummy round" with the bullet of your choice set to the OAL you want. Send it to PT&G. PT&G can cut a reamer to match that. My bet is they already have those specs and cutting your reamer would be no problem.

Thanks for the replies. I have been on a mission to track down all the parts for the 6.5x55 I'm going to have my smith build me. I have a Rock Creek barrel ordered , I got a heck of a deal on a slightly used HS precision stock today from my smith. I would say that FREE is a heck of a deal :) Now I'm looking for a donor 700 long action and I will be almost ready to go. With that said I talked to my buddy today and asked him about the 6.5 reamer he has and if he had any bias or input on the length of the throat. He said he has the standard reamer that will allow for the longer bullets. He said the gun will shoot very well even though the lands will be a little ways off from the ogive of the bullet.

My question to y'all that have built one of these is should I go with his reamer OR drop some coin and get one that is 10 thou(or what ever measurement is best) from the bullet touching the lands?? I figured since this is a special build I would build it to shoot the weight of projectiles I'm wanting. Any input or bias towards a reg length throat or a shorter one would be great to hear. Thanks in advance for any info. I will be loading my own and not buying any factory bullets if that has any bearing on your advice. Hank

I always order custom reamers from a place in Canada called Taylor tool. Check out their website. They have a catalogue on their with all of there the inventory stock, but will also do specials with blueprint stock. I always get my special done there because of the fast shipment time. Anyways here is the link www.taylortool.com It has a lot of info on there so

I find it easiest to just call and ask all the questions I have. One of their staff Colleen is amazing! She has been working there for almost 45 years (company has been around since 1918) She knows all her stuff so just call her! The number is 519-658-9378 not sure what her extension, sry

I looked at Taylors' on line catalog,,, didn't see any chambering reamers . Think I'll just stick with Dave Manson. I've always been pleased with tools from his shop.

Fair enough, I checked out the Manson catalog and it is quite extensive! Taylor's catalogue offers stock only, but they do special requests

I see you're a Canadian. You'd have to check with Manson to find out if they're an exporter if even that's required for Canadian sales. I can't say enough good about Daves' tools. I'm sure he's behind, companies that do good work always are. I use Hart barrels almost exclusively (another maker of fine products), they've gone from 4-6 weeks at the beginning of the year to 10-11 weeks.

Do PTG have their reamer prints available on line? I have looked all around their web site without finding them, but maybe I didn't look in the right place?

The best 6.5X55 match print has a .2965 neck and .188 f.b. 1-30 lead angle. This has been one of our best selling reamers. I have one myself and it is great. Call me and I will go over the print with you. Megun will send a print to you. We have one on the shelf. 138 bucks. Thanks Dave
