Protecting the bedding when clear coating stock

I see pics of stock finishes that have been clear coated and I wonder how the bedding is being protected form the finish. It would seem that taping the bedding would be an approach but the clear coat would also seem to harden on the tape and make it difficult to remove.

What is the preferred method to protect the bedding when applying layers of clear coat stock finish?

Oh, it's not that bad. Just like a car. This one got 10 coats of automotive clearcoat and baked in a automotive paint booth. Masking came off fine.

Sounds like tape is the general method. I’ll have to monitor the buildup and decide how to ensure clean lines while protecting the bedding.

Pick up a mini file set from Harbor Freight, the little half round will become your best friend.
Use a finger as a stop ,work in back n forth motion to expose the tape edge.
Exacto knife helps working exposed edge and cleaning up overhang around top of bedding.

I had a local body shop spray my Boyds thumbhole for my savage 17hmr and told them not to spray the action or barrel channel. They did anyway. It was free but still. They just used left over clear from a job that was going to get tossed. I guess at this point it would have to be bedded.

Just masking tape. Yes, it can cause problems but rarely, if you're careful pulling it off. Like Brett said, a file to cut the edge down to the tape is good...so is pulling it off before it fully hardens. It's not difficult at all.

Mike I just battled tape bridging on the AS stock.
I knew my 1st primer session was going to burry the tape masking off the rails, unable to pull after last batch of primer as 1st 2 batches had already gone to gell.
I wound up blocking over bridged tape before trying to remove.
20231103_144548.jpgafter a couple painstaking hours with Exacto knife and single edge razor blade I managed to to get it all cleaned up.
Any subsequent masking of rails was done exactly as you described.
Edges were masked to pull while wet.20231113_105705.jpg

As you well know, shat happens but I'm sure it'll be another one of your masterpieces when done. I can see how that one was gonna be a little trouble from the start.

Stock came out sweet, it's back home with @TylerFromMS.
It became humorous to us, I'd text "hey I bet you can't guess what I'm doing?"
Response was always "masking"
