Refinishing a stock

Not a doctor
I got a old Rem 700 stock early 70's, that has the clear coat coming off. And i wanted to re-clear the stock but didn't want to use something (chemical) that would remove the finish, as i don't want to re-stain it, if possible. Any suggestions?

The chemicals used to strip that finish should'nt pull the stain off the wood..
The only other way is to sand it off and that more than likely will pull the stain off..

There is a good easy to use product called Arrow gun stock finish that I have used that is available on line and at gunshows across the US. I have used it on bare wood and have seen it used on wood with an existing finish, its very easy to use applied with a few drops on fine wet/dry paper. This is a good choice for amature stock finishers as well as experienced.

I've done this a few times. You need to check this stuff out

It works amazing and is so simple. You just spray is on....Let it sit 24 hours and you get wipe off all of the laquer with a paper towel. Use a tooth brush to get in the checkered areas.....I ran mine under the sink just to get the last bit off.

Its a hell of alot easier than sanding or anything else...

If yours has the ebony forend don't get it on it...I would lightly sand that portion.
I sprayed is on the forend and it almost "gelled" it a little. Once I took the citristrip off I let the forend dry and I sanded and buffed it and it looks good as new

Here is a sako I did..

Remington stain is in the clear coat, ever notice the lighter colored wood when you strip? Always tint with a brown, if you want it to look like a Rem.
