Proof research barrels

And hang on when the word best gets thrown in, you say best, your pants now come down to your ankles.

“Best” is one of those absolutes. Like “can’t”, “never” and “always”

They should be used sparingly and when used, prefaced with a qualifying statement

Still subjective and a matter of perception.
I read something on MSN last week about some of the top movies of all time were not that good. The Godfather, Casablanca, Gone with the wind, African Queen, etc, were not what they are cracked up to be. Biggest complaint was the length of them. I guess some millennial punk with the attention span of a gnat needs a fiery explosion every 5 minutes to be entertained. And 90rd capacity magazines that look my like 15 rdr's.

AT LAST!

We now have 4 groups to look at..... well let me just clear the air and make it real simple so's it don't look like I'm "bashing"

BY DEFINITION...... if those 4 groups are representative of "a gun that shoots" then Y'ALL WIN!!

I will agree..... those are some GREAT cf barrel groups!

That's exactly how carbon wrapped barrels shoot......

You've made my point much better than I could have.

The OP is wanting to build a 30 Nosler
He didnt say what for, but the groups above are probably realistic so the OP can decide if it is accurate enough for HIM after all he is the OP and he asked the question

After sorting out a few things with my rifle and loads I’ve settled on the 180g Nosler BT as acceptable for my upcoming deer hunting trip

180 Nosler BT, 39.5g H4895, 210m primer, Lapua brass, 2.825 OAL (mag length)

0.43 MOA 5 shot group at 100

There doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with this particular PROOF barrel

Proof on the paper ;). I have had some awesome groups out of my PROOF barrel. I will have to dig into my phone and see if I can track down any group photos.

Coming in late on this one. Just want to say I have had 2 carbon wrapped barrels in my life, both for a hunting gun and both chambered in 6BR. First one is an ABS barrel I bought in 2006, and the 2nd one is a Proof Research I bought a year ago. Accuracy wise, both shoot to levels similar as do my benchrest rigs when shot from a rest setup. And better then any factory barreled rifle I've ever owned.

This little gem showed up today. Still waiting on the Curtis Custom Helix action and AG composites stock.

30 cal / 1 in 9" twist / finish at 26"

That will be a nice rig. What are you thinking on the final weight

Rough calculation makes me think it will be a little over 10.5 lbs not counting sling or bipod.

Action/rail: 36 oz
Barrel: 48oz
Muzzle brake: 4 oz
DBM metal/mag: 8 oz
Trigger: 2 oz
Stock: 27 oz + 2 oz of bedding material weight
Scope: 36 oz
One piece NF or Spuhr scope mount: 6-8 oz

TOTAL: a little over 10.5 lbs

So not a "light" rifle by any means, but easily packable for me and heavy enough to help reduce recoil a bit. I may look at different scopes because that's one area where I could cut a good amount of weight. Just have to see how I like it once it's all put together.

Ok,I am so digging up this old thread. So much hot air insulated from the outside world; we better let it out!

I'm going BSF barrels in 308 for LR-308. That should eliminate any benchrest discussions. What does this barrel get me? Well it's 20"; carbon, AND fluted; so that should really suck in the accuracy dept! 20.9oz. how much does your scope weight?

It's due to arrive tomorrow; and I plan on burning it out plinking, slow fire to 790y, and maybe some local 600y MR F-class matches. Heck, I bought it to try it and have fun. Rifle will be so light with all the other lightweights stuff that I'm expecting recoil on par with my 338L!

Build concept; what would you carry all day? Is this even durable enough to carry.

BSF selected because I think they may be onto something. Price is less that a custom 10 barrel; and Dan Wesson had tensioned barrels for revolvers, I figure with; let's try it out.

All the "hot air" and opinions, and "facts" aside; I believe a bad day at the range beats any day at the office. If you agree, I dare you to expand your trials and post details, targets, and keep/sell info here.

I didn’t realize Proof was in Kalispell until I drove past them two weeks ago on vacation. I really wanted to invite myself in for a tour;)
