Proof Research All Stainless Barrels

TIMO

Still working on it???
Silver $$ Contributor
Was looking at the Proof Research stainless barrel (not the carbon fiber wrap barrel) for a REM 700, just as an improvement over the factory barrel for club level matches. It would be chambered in .223 Rem. Just wondering if anyone has used one and how they performed and how they might compare to similar barrels (Criterion). I was thinking about a Remage setup.

Thanks,

Tim

Dusty, good idea, I have not shopped around much if any. Just have never seen in type of informative review for the stainless barrel they produce. I am not sold on them, just kind of kicking the tires on this type of setup.

If i remember right they make cut and button barrels. The cut rifled barrels get carbon wrapped. They bought the barrel company lawrence barrels to make them themselves. Yea i never heard of them either.

Proof stress relieves their steel in house, maybe the only cut barrel maker that does. I have put a few of the SS barrels on BR rifles and they will shoot with the best. Lawrence barrels held some 1kyd records. However Proof uses all new equipment, its not Lawrence stuff anymore.

I have one in .260 Remington, although it's on an AR10. It shoots very very well for a large-frame gas gun. I bore scoped it recently, and internally it looks every bit as good as a Kreiger/Bart. I wouldn't hesitate to grab one for a bolt gun.

On a related note, they do seem to be gaining market share in the PRS community; not that it's as accuracy oriented as say F-Class, or BR, but I suspect they wouldn't be gaining popularity if their barrels didn't shoot.

Thanks to everyone for the info. I will do some more research and loot at all the options out there. Keep the info coming in.
The current rifle started out as a REM SBS Tactical (.223), 20" with the Hogue stock. Replaced the stock with a Magpul. Had the barrel threaded and installed a muzzle brake, didn't really need it. Also had the recoil lug pinned and a friend re-chambered and fitted a take off Rem. 308 Win barrel since I had to a separate .308 Win bolt. So it has gone through a bit of transition over the years. Mainly just something for informal club matches that I can swap out different barrels for.
