Problem with Savage .17 HMR

My savage 17HMR has the same problem, but it's only every once in a while, not all the time. I think it's odd, but just thought to myself "it must be the brass." I probably went through a couple hundred rounds before I seen one of these splits. it's rare that it happens, but I've caught it a couple of times over the last couple years of shooting it. (I bought it brand new).

just my .02

I think it was her gun. My gun doesn’t split them. And Savage replaced her gun because there was a issue with the chamber.

Mine defiantly wasn’t just the brass. I was getting a split every clip (4 rounds). 4 rounds since my clip only liked to take 4. I sent it way and savage said it was the gun. I received my new one and have no problem with the same brass. I am now watching this carefully.

I've had the thing for a couple years, and it has only recently done this... Do you think Savage would take it back, being a few years old?

Is it possible to have it set back, and get it rechambered? The barrel shoots awesome, so I'd hate to mess with it. But, if it's on the dangerous side, I don't want it.

Siiri, Can you take some measurements of your fired brass (out of the new gun) and post them up? I'll check mine to see if they're bigger... Measure the base (just above the rim), the neck (where the neck meets the shoulder), and case body (right below the shoulder).

Yes I can queen_stick, but I won’t be able to until this weekend. So I’ll get them up as soon as I can.

Queen Stick,
You also might try CCI/Speer customer service They are usually very helpful and nice to deal with. Might just be they have seen this before as they shoot millions of rimefire rounds a year in there QA tunnels. I never thought of telling Siiri that when she was having trouble I work there I guess I could ask the question for you.

bozo, I'd appreciate it if you could check it out.

The problem I have now, is that it's not repeatable... I could go a few hundred rounds before seeing it again, or might show up on the first shot. I'll have to take it out this weekend and shoot bunch of rounds to see I can find one.

Top of the neck - 0.19
Below shoulder - 0.242
Just above the rim - 0.244
Hope this helps queen_stick and best of luck. :)

thanks Siiri, I shot today and went through 25 rounds before I got a split. It's not a full-blown split, but you can see it's right on the verge... it's split at the very edge of the neck, and hairline fractured down to the shoulder. I've seen this and I've seen full splits.

Will measure my fired cases and unfired cases tomorrow, and post them up. I'm interested in seeing the difference compared to your numbers.

the case I have with a split...
.192 neck
.241 body, just below the shoulder
.244 base, right above the rim

Other fired cases without split neck... measure the same as the one with the split.

unfired cases (bullets still in, of course)
.190 neck
.238 body, just below the shoulder
.238 base, right above the rim

======

looks like my chamber has a neck diameter .002 larger than yours. Is that enough to create a split?

anyone with the problem of split necks in 17HMR, read this thread...

http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=296490&page=3

Reading that, I'd say it's the ammo more often than it's the gun. The loose chambers aren't helping, but they're tight enough that splits shouldn't occur.
