Problem with Savage .17 HMR

RonAKA said:
Interesting. I would have guessed a worn reamer would make a smaller hole.

Hey,
Yeah me too, he wasn't 100% sure what was wrong with it. It was just an idea from him and I didn't have enough time to talk to him. He was quite busy today with all the people going into his shop because of hunting season soon. Maybe Savage will have something to say, but doubtful. It will just be nice to have my .17HMR back and working. :)

Siiri,
Thats great! I am happy you have the ball rolling in the right direction. Tell your boyfriend he has to share his 17 for awhile ::)

RonAka,
I am not a machinist (YET) :P but I imagine it wouldn't be any different than trying to drill a hole with a dull drill bit, You push harder to make it go and the hole come's out not round and oversized. Anyway just my thought on that.

So it will be 2 weeks tomorrow and I was wondering how long does this take? The local gunsmith said they usualy take about 2 weeks but now hes saying they take awhile.
Has anyone sent a gun to savage? and how long did you wait?

I know it's frustrating ,My cz 452 17hmr and my best friends Ruger 77/17 had the same thing happen last year we both had our guns check out by our gun smiths . wow was it a relief to find out our guns were fine and it was the cci and their Brass. we had around 1000 rounds that was replace , both hornady , and cci . maybe you have some old ammo?

I will keep that in mind for when I get it back and if it happens again.
Thanks!

Siiri,
You havn't got your savage back yet? I doubt you find it the ammo. Didn't you say in earlier post that your boyfriend shot the same ammo in his rifle with no problems?

Nope not yet and it's been 7 weeks. My boyfriends gun has no problems at all with the exact same ammo as I was shooting.

Siiri,
Thats a bummer, you won't be able to shoot your 17 in nice weather :'( its probably getting pretty cold up there isn't it? How is your 7-08 working for you? nice hearing from you.

Wayne.

The past few day have been really nice for November. High of 10 C and sunny. I wish I could have gotten out shooting. 7mm08 has been really great. Almost done 2 boxes of factory ammo, and going to start reloading for it soon. I have a reloading kit coming :) The Lyman Crusher II Expert Reloading Kit.

Hey,
I finally found out what's going on with my gun. :) Well Savage didn't tell me what was wrong with it, but they are sending me a whole new gun and I'll get it in 5 business days. :) Finally get my wonderful 17HMR home!

Thanks everyone for the help that you have given me through this process.

Siiri,
Thats awesome, I am happy for you ;) What has the weather been like up there?
Mon + Wed here were single didgets with a -2* F on tue, its 31* F out right now 8:00 pm sat evening snowing a little off and on, and been real windy out, not good shooting weather. I shot my deer day before yesterday 20* F blowing sideways.
Wayne.

sounds like your back in business ;D to bad savage never told you what was the problem. Do you still have some of the ammo from your first post? If so is their any problems?

I had a bit of my old ammo left. No problems with it.

It's been warm for the past few days as high as 5 C, and rained all day today, but turned to snow in the evening.

I think it's the ammo. Here's why...

My savage 17HMR has the same problem, but it's only every once in a while, not all the time. I think it's odd, but just thought to myself "it must be the brass." I probably went through a couple hundred rounds before I seen one of these splits. it's rare that it happens, but I've caught it a couple of times over the last couple years of shooting it. (I bought it brand new).

just my .02
