Priming tool

Good info here! I think I’m gonna get either the Sinclair or the Frankford. I’m new to reloading so the hand primer I just bought was the Lyman EZ hand primer. It worked great for the first 50 or so rounds I reloaded, now it won’t seat any of them all the way, so I’m using the priming tool on my press. Pretty frustrating, but I guess the old adage “ya get what ya pay for!” Always rings true.

I have an original Hornady hand primer. The current ones are similar. I liked it better than an RCBS a friend let me try bc it pivots at the top like pliers, rather than at the bottom. It felt more natural to me. After a bajillion primers seated it got to the point where they would barely go flush. Disassembly revealed the holes where the pins went through the pot metal handle And in the link were wallowed out. I reverse engineered and machined a new handle from aluminum with brass bushings for the pivot points. It works silky smooth now and I could bury primers if I wanted to. Overkill and more costly, time wise, than one of the expensive ones, probably. But hey, I needed something to do on a rainy day, and I wanted to load without waiting a week for the brown truck to arrive.

Why would you want adjustable depth control. If you uniform pockets you know every pocket has a different depth. From the same box of Lapua brass the pocket uniformer removes zero brass from some cases and a lot of brass removed from other cases. There is no correct depth. They must be seated to the bottom of the pocket. The only way to do this is by feel.

Adjustable depth control is for guys that want to seat primers (which vary in height somewhat) so that some are slightly crushed or are short of bottoming in the pocket, yet want to beat their chests about how they are all seated exactly .xxx dimension below flush. (which I am sure they are).

Early on, I believed what I was told that you MUST use a hand priming tool to get that perfect "feel" of a properly seated primer. I used a couple of Lee hand tools & then a couple RCBS hand tools. I never was happy with the hand tools. I tried a RCBS primer die which is definitely adjustable & definitely has a fixed stop! But I finally I settled on a RCBS bench mounted tool & it has worked perfectly for me & does a great job.

BTW: I always uniform primer pockets on their first use. I rarely uniform flash holes.
