Primers ,,,Hard to KILL,,,

I dispose of them in a large brushfire that I have here on the farm occasionally. I sit by the fire while roasting weenies and threw two or three or four into the fire at a time and it adds a little excitement to the event as they pop, when the fire is large and roaring the primers are just a little speck of the energy going on and nothing to worry about

Way back in the 60's I placed a LR primer on Mom's coil burner kitchen stove. Hit the high setting and ran. Sounded like a .22 short when it popped. That anvil chipped the painted ceiling. Fixed it with Colgate tooth paste. It was never discovered. :D

In the name of science and safety, I conducted an experiment to show the powerful forces generated when a free primer cup and anvil explosively separate. I sacrificed 10 CCI 250 magnum primers for your reading enjoyment.

A simple propane nozzle in a vice setup worked well.

All very loud in my basement bangs were safely contained within the steel soup can. The block of spruce was taped to the inside can lid afterwards. About a 3.5 inch gap from primer to impact material. Primers were inverted twice for the wood penetration test. The cups facing up were considerably louder than the anvil up. Don't know why.

Note the cups and anvils firmly embedded in the wood. Note the dents in the can lid and the torn cups.

For your personal safety.....DON'T THROW LIVE PRIMERS IN A CAMPFIRE.

That is all.

My daughter and SIL are separated, it's getting ugly. While I was over at her house, I noticed a weber gas grill. I asked who is getting this in the end? Maybe I could put the primers in the grill and send it to his new place???

Several years ago, I ended up with a couple boxes of .45-70 ammunition loaded with black powder. I had no intention of shooting them, so I decided to take them apart. After soaking the cases in water and then oil for months, I used a drill bit roughly the inside diameter of the case—turned by hand—to remove the remaining black powder. Once that was done, I thoroughly scrubbed and cleaned the inside of the cases until I was certain there was no powder left.

Since I wanted the dummy rounds I planned to display to have dented primers, I used a trapdoor Springfield and chambered each case individually, pulling the trigger on each one. Surprisingly, about 75% of the primers still went off, even after months submerged in water or oil. Pretty resilient stuff.

My scientific primer test. Don't try this at home. :p

I have handled many tons of high explosives so I wasn't to scared of a little steenkin primer.

A mistake with explosives and they scrape up parts.
