Primer Mistakes?

I am a new(ish) reloader who is going slow and trying to learn from my mistakes.

Today, I made a mistake and am not sure what to do with the primer/brass.

Using a hand priming tool, I could immediately tell by feel that something went wrong with one of my rounds. Upon inspection, I realized that the primer went into the primer pocket sideways and looked to be deformed.

I am not sure what to do at this point. Assuming it is not fixable, how does one safely dispose of the end product?

It is easily fixable. Carefully and gently de-prime the case just as you would a fired case. Been there, just like you are now. The first time it happened to me, that's all I did; the second time a few years later, I did work a couple of drops of penetrating oil into the primer and let it set for a couple of hours before I de-primed.

Safety glasses for handling. Never tried anything but have read that oil kills primers.
Someone please chime in here.

Just decap normally, but very slowly just to be on the safe side.

Go slow and easy decapping and you will be fine...if you are nervous wear safety glasses and hearing protection . I don't do that, but I do spin my shellholder around and load the cartridge from the back when decapping live primers . My theory is if something goes wrong the blast is not directly in my face, I hope I never test that theory.

Primers are tougher than you might think - designed to work with certain directional impact. I hit this one with a firing pin 2 times before I got a good enough look to see that it was sideways. I once deprimed 600 live primers - bought brass from a buddy and needed to swap to my preferred primer. As always, easy does it and stay safe.

You can avoid this in the future by elevating the primer so you can see and verify it is correct, then insert the case and press the primer into the cup. This only seems to happen with SRP's in handloading trays. Never had a LRP flip or go sideways in my Hornaday hand primer.

With hand primers I've found you can learn what a sideways or upside down primer feels like before it's pushed in. Enough so that you can stop and reorient the primer.
It does require doing the priming essentially in two steps - getting the primer to just engage the primer pocket, confirm the feel, decide to proceed or to fix.
With practice, it's just slightly slower than not.
I've tried Hornady, RCBS and 21st century [uses a Lee loading tray] and a Frankford 'Platinum'. Through a couple thousand cases, the Frankford has NOT flipped a SRP yet.

When I get a primer like that, I just lever it out with the tip of a knife blade and move on.

How to dispose of the end product?
I throw it in the trash.

Getting a dedicated depriming die like the Lee depriming die will also help , you will use it... It's not "sealed" like a regular die so if there's a pop the gasses can escape a little easier... Will it scare you , yes... I like most here have pushed out my share of live primers with no problems , just go slow... You can keep a jar of oil to drop those primers in which will ruin them and just toss them out... Or just like many said just toss them in the garbage... Seating primers is a feel thing and you will get it over time... Just take your time and be safe , reloading isn't a speed thing by any means...

Normal deprime. Safety glasses. I also put a heavy piece of cloth over the press. You only get issued one set of eyes.

I’ve been reloading for 40+ years. I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve done that! Hundreds, probably!

I like the idea of putting the cloth over it... I keep a towel under my bench and will give it a try next time I have a bunch to do... Did 300 in some old brass awhile back... Dang sure couldn't hurt.... I have never had one go off , but you're right it only takes one....
